I believe there is an interview with Milch on one of the boxsets where he says he used contemporary curse words as emphasis, because their language then may have been rough but saying "damn" then would be equal to our contemporary "cocksucker" now - so they didn't actually swear like a bunch of ghetto rappers back then. Many cowboys were quite literate and well spoken.

If you enjoyed Deadwood and haven't read any Louis L'Amour you're missing out, I'd recommend any of the Sackett books to start.
