New Jersey Police Stop High School Students on School Trip

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Fallout from an incident involving New Jersey police and black and Hispanic students along the New Jersey turnpike has students asking for an apology.

WCBS reporter Paul Murnane says it happened back on November 21st, when Queens high school students were coming back from a trip to Washington and were stopped by police who were looking into a 911 report of a black male with a gun.

The kids say when they were pulled over on the highway, they were forced to march backwards from their bus, cuffed, and questioned.

The kids say they felt singled out; that the police response was excessive.

Christine Molnar President of "Safe Space" which organized the trip says the kids would like an apology. "They were scared, they feel angry and now they feel good. They feel that they have had a chance to talk about what it meant and who they are and have a chance to set the record straight," said Molnar.

A state police spokesman tells Channel 5, the incident was regrettable.
