As for polos specifically, it depends on the role model you're using. If you wanna go for the pizza delivery guy look, there's that. On the other hand, if you have in mind more the Sean Connery or Steve McQueen look, there's that. Like any piece of clothing, you can look ridiculous or cool, depending on how you wear it.

Well, obviously there isn't a set age but in the same way that, as you say, anyone over 16 shouldn't wear a band t-shirt (which I agree with), I think there is an age where 'fashion' t-shirts (to compromise) just look horrible. Obviously a plain t-shirt, on a fit-ish person, isn't going to look out of place at all (though they're not for me).
