I think people have become bigger playas now. profile sites make it easier to manipulate lots of people for yr ego without a community to out you for talking it up to more than one person.
all the people I've internetted/met have been part of forums. One on IRC, but he was also incidentally on a forum that I posted at, but I didnt know until later..
