Hammer's first horror fim really did revolutionise the genre. By using colour it abandoned the shadowplay of the earlier German and Universal gothics. Suddenly blood became a key factor in the horror aesthetic. In b&w blood would just be another shade of grey, in colour it could be presented in vivid red. An absolutely crucial film in the development of the way the horror movie would look in the future.
