I expected to see a lot more films in this thread.
Two that spring to mind for me are:

2001: A Space Odyssey (Thanks to Arthur C. Clark's visions of the future for the most part) and Andrei Tarkovsky's Stalker (1979).

Oh, and Eraserhead.
