I lost about 6,000 tracks when my 1st notebook died. Luckily my tech was available to salvage about 3/4 of them.
I've dropped my ipod like 7 feet onto concrete while listening to it and after a reboot it was fine.
I listen to music on the go all the time and mine is like an extension of my being. Original silver cds rarely leave the shelf because it's a super pain in the ass to track them down if they're damaged or stolen. iPods, while more expensive, are available anywhere.
