That is kind of odd. Sounds like they're being a bit manipulative with you.

I have family like that, too. When I first moved back to the same area where my dad lives, he expected me to call him and let him know whenever I was going out of town for the weekend or on vacation. This was when I was like 36. He'd get seriously pissed if we took off for Chicago or Minneapolis for the day without letting him know: "What if something happened here, or to you guys on the road?"

I'm actually glad I now live 1,000 miles away.
