Its difficult to explain. He writes alot about characters frustrated with the world of 'McJobs' and comsumerism, that escape into their own irony laden worlds. He's also a visual artist so the layout and visual structures of the book tend to take on a life of their own. He's often said Andy Warhol is one of his biggest inspirations. The Warhol influence is clearly seen in the visual style of his last book 'JPod'. What really makes Coupland great though is his use of dialoge and character. All his characters tend have very strange opinions and outlooks on the world.
Begin with his first book 'GenerationX'. Its widely considered to be his best and is a good starting point for getting acquainted with his unique style.
