I take that "religion shouldn't be for the self-satisfied" as meaning "religion shouldn't be for those who are smug about it". I've come across plenty of people who seem to beleive that their religion makes them better than others - they're the ones I would call self-satisfied. Assuming that that's the sort of thing that pbradley is referring to, I'm with him on that. Religion/faith should be inclusive, not exclusive.
