i hate a lot of spielberg movies because his populist take on things doesn't interest me, and the crowd-pleasing shit, well... let's say i dislike in on ideological grounds.
technically, however, you can't put a finger on the bastard. he is really good at his craft. unfortunatelly those talents are wasted on silly stories often times, but he has his good moments.
this is evident in his first or so feature,"duel", which tells the story of this neurotic wuss being chased by some angry trucker on the highway. the story is stupid, the characters are stupid & unlikeable, but the visual storytelling is formidable. so you have to give him credit.
"jaws" as a story is barely meh, but the way he puts the film together is where it's brilliant. this could easily have been a shitty b movie without him (in a way, it is, but...)
now: "empire of the sun" is a great fucking movie. he owes j.g. ballard the story, of course, so this movie is almost perfect for me because spielberg takes care of the visuals for something that is not mindless pap.
i hated spielberg so long that i have not seen a lot of his movies, like ryan's privates or that other, schindler's list, or the color purple-- a ton of them. i blame shit like "hook" and "e.t." and all the indianas for this.
but there are 2 sides to spielberg's talents, when he shoots a good story he's awesome at it.
