It's not dubious at all, unfortunately. I've witnessed it happen myself once a few years ago and have read about it a few times since then. The combination of high speed CD-ROM drives (52x is an incredibly fast spinning ratio when you think about it... it's 52 times the speed of a normal CD-player!) and cheap, old, or damaged CD-Rs can sometimes cause the discs to explode.

Maybe the CD-R had fell on the ground a few times and had some small, hardly visible cracks on the disc? I'd normally consider sony a decent brand so it's worrying that it could happen with those as well...
