Julie Monaco

In her series of pictures cs_0 Julie Monaco creates an artificial, abstracted reality. Wild and romantic nature is a purely digital creation resulting from a process of computing. It is based on numbers, on numerical code. The image is neither based on specific models such as photographs or scans, nor is it generated on the basis of the real thing. The pictures are created by means of software tools which are defined by several computer programmes in terms of selection and parameters. A three-dimensional model developed that way is visualised by means of rendering, i.e. optically upgraded by computer-aided processes (algorithms).

Although the representation (the computed image) seems diametrically opposed to that which is depicted (nature), there is a specific analogy between the two media: the fractal which links computer technology and nature as the smallest commondenominator.
