An overall atmosphere of mutually assured discontent.
That sinking feeling of people just drifting apart.
Wanting to profess your feelings for someone but feeling incapable due to the uncertain times and having much to work through emotionally before putting yourself out there.
Another death in the family - we weren't close. But it still somewhat adds to the overall atmosphere.
