It definitely seems to be a zeitgeist thing. There's a real mood of protest right now, the extent of which I don't think I've experienced before. It's far bigger than the anticapitalist protests of a few years ago - even though I think they probably provided the model for what we're currently seeing. What's also interesting is the commitment of the protestors to simply go on and on. It obviously remains to be seen if they do but I'd certainly say the UK government atleast is becoming quite worried about the prospect of regular riots in its cities. It's a massive financial cost in terms of policing (which is itself faced with massive cuts). Right now, the British media are primarily against the protestors but I suspect that it'll only take for a fifteen year old middle class schoolkid to die in a kettle for the possibility of a sizable backlash from the newspapers.
