I've heard that too, but I read an interview with Joey when "Bonzo Goes to Bittburg" came out (I think it was actually in the first issue of Spin, which had Sonic Youth on the cover if I'm remembering right, too) where he explained the song saying (paraphrased, not quoted), "I mean, we're right wingers, but that was just too much to excuse genocide".

After that they sure appeared to get increasingly involved in "liberal" causes.
