this is a bit deeper, it not just foreign music that Iran is rejecting, it is anything not orthodox liturgical, sort of like the Pope declaring that the only legitimate music for Catholics could be listening to and participating in the prayer services, the Masses, the Vigils, the Psalms, the Hymns etc etc
Diehard pentecostals do this, where preachers and youth ministers encourage people to throw out any "secular music" (honestly, I had never heard this term before until arguing with Christafari's Mark Mohr) and replacing it with all the tailor made "Christian" music found in the gift shop of the church, horrible, imitation music of any genre with the artful lyrics replaces with cliched and hackneyed hymnography..

There is plenty of indigenous, artistic music in Iran that is being persecuted in the name of religious zeal (well a power trip in the name of religiousity)
