The Wizard Knight

Any of you read this? I did last year, it still sticks in my mind.

Try to imagine every cliche of high fantasy, now rewritten to be entirely new and mind blowing.

If you don't read this book you'll have missed out on something important and wonderful and all the cool people will laugh at you. Neil Gaiman

I'm used to the cool people laughing at me. :(

I'm also a sucker for fantasy fiction. I think that I've read just about every D&D novel that's ever come out.

how does Mr. Gaiman compare to RA Salvatore?

Lamont Cranston 07.16.2009 09:12 AM

Salvatore writes for media licenses, Wolfe and Gaiman write original works.

floatingslowly 07.16.2009 09:25 AM

I'm ok with media licenses if they are done well.

and...you'll have to pardon me, I'm multi-multi-tasking this morning:

I've read American Gods and liked it a lot. I knew that I knew the name, but was having trouble pushing through my hypo-caffeinated state. I've heard that Anansi Boys was good too.

floatingslowly 07.16.2009 09:28 AM

and there I go again. I just googled Gaiman. so, I guess I still don't know who Gene Wolfe is. ok no holding out. it's coffee time.

dirty bunny 07.16.2009 01:59 PM

American Gods was good. Gaiman is perhaps most famous for the epic comic book The Sandman though ;)

Lamont Cranston 07.16.2009 08:22 PM

Gene Wolfe wrote The Book of the New Sun

floatingslowly 07.16.2009 08:30 PM

so is The Knight the first in the series?

I'll pick it up when I'm done with what I'm reading.

we went to the bookstore a few days ago and I just didn't know what to get. it's all really hit and miss in the sci-fi/fantasy category (although I'll even read the shit ones just for easy digestion).

I was tempted to read The Dresden Files, but the "as seen on sci-fi" sticker scared me off. fucking SyFy.

Lamont Cranston 07.16.2009 09:08 PM

The Wizard Knight was first published in two parts: The Knight, The Wizard.

floatingslowly 07.16.2009 10:03 PM

well that's rather confusing then, isn't it?

calling it "The Knight Wizard" would have made things much clearer.

Sonic Youth 37 07.16.2009 10:08 PM

Gaiman and Pratchett's Good Omens was one of my favorite books I read last year.

Lamont Cranston 07.17.2009 03:33 AM

not really that sort of fantasy 37

Lamont Cranston 07.17.2009 07:33 AM

why do you judge it poorly?

Yeah, I know. Gaiman was mentioned, so I made the post. I've never read any of this "high fantasy" or whatever stuff.

Toilet & Bowels 07.17.2009 12:29 PM

i might give this a try, i've been curious about fantasy lately, the only things i've read have been by tolkien, i loved that stuff when i was a teenager but now i find it pretty dull, but i'm curious to find out what is of interest in this whole genre that has sprung up in his wake.

Lamont Cranston 07.17.2009 10:25 PM

Well this harkens back to the medieval romances and earlier fantasy of guys like Lord Dunsany.

DeadDiscoDildo 07.18.2009 12:40 AM

I thought this was going to be a spoof on Batman.

Oh well.
