I think I am finally getting old..
I haven't been ghetto blasting any music for at least three weeks, and it is mandatory in this town at any age and any time of the day, be it 6 in the mornin or 2 in the mornin, to be bumping your music way to loud, in particular, you are competing with your neighbor, just to listen to your own shit in a way..
I have been playing my guitar at acceptable levels, and not often at that, its been mostly acoustic.. I dont know what happened to me, I used to be so obnoxious with my music! are any of you also experiencing this aging of your musical volume preferences? |
I've never listened to my iPod so loud that everyone else can hear it. It hurts my ears.

thats not quite ghetto blastin enough, I'm talkin about the stereo. |
There are things about this time in my life that force a certain mellowness on my part, but it doesn't exactly reflect my desires. Having a baby at home and a currently sick wife is preventing me from going to see the Legendary Pink Dots tonight for instance. I'd rather be rocking out, but if it meant not having my son around, it wouldn't be worth it. From what I know of Edward Ka-Spel, I'm sure he understands.
I definitely listened to more noise rock in my twenties than I do overall now, but I don't love pussy galore or big black any less. I just don't have the time to listen to them as much as I did then. I'm glad my son actually seems to get into pretty noisy stuff, but of course I don't blast it loud enough to hurt his hearing. |

I honestly haven't played it around him, but he probably would. I'll give it a try. His favorite is Explosions in the Sky. |
Pump Laughing Quarter by Autechre. That's bound to blow your subs out.

I first heard it at 18 and it was a life changing moment. "She's in a Bad Mood" was the first non-mainstream or art rock music I ever heard and I instantly fell in love. Mind, I got all confusion and no sex for several years after that... |
kind of a little bit, when I was right at the back of the last show i went to, and it still seemed really loud ahah. but the accoustics were just really good, I think.
There is a really high chance that Im slightly deaf too, from the constant 70+ decibels at my last job. |
I love to crank my music where it punches like mad (I have some kickass Paradigm speakers), but not in an apartment or roomate situation. I only do it when I live in my own separate house or alone in this one.
Of course I usually listen to headphones because at the moment I am in fairly tight quarters and I DO CRANK them. It's kept contained. I HATE being imposed on by others disregard for their loud music though. I want to listen to what I want to hear, not forced to hear others. So I practice that rule. I'm not religious but the Do unto others as you'd have them do unto you is my motto as far as LOUD music. I've never noticed a decrease in my hearing after 35+ years of LOUD ROCK concerts and my own loud personal playing. I don't do it to distorto levels, but VERY PUNCHY. |
I never understood the appeal of listening to music that loud. It isn't cool. It is obnoxious. Just turn it up loud enough to hear it well. Why go farther?
|
^it's nice to listen to your music loud though, I don't know what it is, but music sounds better loud. As far as having it loud enough to annoy the neighbours is another thing, loud enough to annoy your household maybe, but to annoy the neighbours is inappropriate to me. I'm far too conscious and aware of my environment to do that.

I had a friend in the '80s who was tripping and decided to hook his boombox with an Einsturzende Neubauten tape in it into his bass amp and crank it. That was really smart, he got to go to jail while tripping. |
someone i think en would have been proud...
