America and the Apocalypse
I'm reading this book at the moment, 'Have a Nice Doomsday. It's about America's evangelical Christian Right since 9/11 and makes the claim that 50 million Americans believe that a biblical Apocalypse will occur in their lifetime. This is a pretty heavy thing to believe in and I'm wondering if a figure like 50 million isn't a bit far fetched. So I'm asking American posters here if they believe that figure could be true, and if they know people that actually believe that an Apocalypse will take place during their lifetime - or even if they believe it themselves!
|
Do you believe they have asked 50 millions americans?
I don't. |
50 million is way far fetched. its got to be more like 70 - 80 million at least.
|
That number does seem a bit high, but at the same time that doesn't mean it isn't true.

bible nuts don't love the sonic youf but about numbers, here's some stats i found http://www.adherents.com/rel_USA.html#religions i don't believe catholix & other major religions are actively waiting for some bollocky "apocalyptus". so i'd look for the nutty denominations to add up-- jehova's witnesses, pentecostals, baptists... so according to the chart, YES. 50 million head cases. impressive, huh? |
If it weren't for this bunch of people, we wouldn't have Jack and Rexella Van Impe, so back off. That's top-notch stuff.
|
yes, it is true, there are that many highly gnorant and pathetic fucks in the USA. Much of our current administration rusn the government basded upon this belief, that they have to prop up Israel because the "true biblical apocalypse and second coming of Jeebus" will not happen until Israel is wholly destroyed, that is the first step according to these religious nuts as they interpret the book of revelations.
fucking morons. |
How can you say this when Barack Hussein Obama is obviously the antichrist?
|
I believe that number is correct. Lots of people believe in the apocalypse.
It distracts them from what really bothers them about life. It's easier to think that there's meaning behind the f'd up things happening around them. This way they don't have to take responsibility and try to fix it...it's God's will, y'know? |
I wouldn't worry too much about it.

You definitely SHOPULD worry about it.
It is these very same fuckos that vote in veery electioand that have a mentality of completely concentrating on what is best for the NOW and completely ignoring the future, because as they see it, ther will be NO FUTURE after the second coming. these fuckers will continue to put our nation in debt, using up all our natural resources, because they :know" that the "end times" are coming. these fucking goddamned stupid ignorant religious assholes.... FUCK I HATE THEIR BULLSHIT SO MUCH |

these are probably the same zionists bastards who tell their elected officials, "sir, I think you misunderstand, this group is not in favor of giving up ANY of the land which God gave to Israel." again I say, America is the Apocalypse, keep on living that life of excessive consumption Americans, the world will last forever wont it? |
Personally, I think the paranoia surrounding evangelicals and their role in American politics is completely overblown. I know many have conspired that American foreign policy (specifically involving Israel and the Middle East) is directed so that everything is kept in line with biblical prophecy, but I'm doubtful.
I'm in close proximity to a slew of evangelical churches and have had contact with its members, and as a whole they are about as 'normal' as you can get in these parts. Which is to say, they may be certain the end is near, but they'd rather talk about where you got your shoes or Cornhusker football. Not about our impending doom. |
leftists and the liberal/intellectual/writer types love to sell similar-minded people 'facts' about those crazy right-wing evangelicals don't they. its such a farce that its laughable. anything for a buck for those not-so-poor hippies

Y'know you're right. No one believes that there is an impending apocalypse. All that stuff they taught me in Catholic school was a joke. |
sure there are people who believe that... there are also people who eat mcdonalds, and people who fall in love with strippers
|
I want my Apocalypse with pastrami on rye, and hold the pickles.

Okay, worry about it. But that's not going to do any good. A more positive thing would to concentrate on what you can do to preserve our natural resources and so on. |
I say down with America. We are in decline.
