pet peeves
Here's one:
When I go to a show and I read the list of bands and I ask someone "what kind of band are they?" and the person replies "indie?" and I say "like what kind of indie? pavement indie, SY indie, belle and sebastian indie, don caballero indie? Indie could mean anything" and then they say "no, more like blablabla, and that's what indie is" (always some band that I've never heard of or only seen on t-shirts) and then when I see the band they are really dumb and awful in one way or another. Sometimes like Coldplay awful, sometimes like Saga awful, sometimes like screamo awful. I was at a show that I was playing once and the soundguy said, y"ou're the electronic act right?" And I say, "no my music is all heavily guitar based, I used drum machines and synth, but guitar is the main instrument." And he said "oh, well that is what someone who told me what you sounded like said." |
Indie's an awfully inaccurate term these days. I agree. So's "alternative." I hear that sometimes and think it's pretty meaningless. It meant something back around 87 to 91, but lost any resonance post-Nevermind.
|
hardcore is another one that ticks me off.
If someone says that a band is hardcore or post-hardcore I've got no clue what I'm in for. I try to remember these things and describe bands by their musical traits. |
Yeah, most genres have just picked up the names of older genres that it's their truest forms no longer exist (emo, hardcore, indie, etc.). Indie is especially strange, since it is short for "independant." So how in the world a band is ever able to put out an "indie" album with Sony is beyond me.
|
that's why I like descriptive music terms, .like people use dto call REM jangle-pop, it describes what their sound is like. which is why I can safely say sonic youth's first 5 albums are noise rock.
when people who are not fans of such music start using the terms, that is when it gets fucked up. for a while in the late 80's, people woudl refer to REM as being "college rock" whichis meaningless, seeing as how Jane's Addiction, Sonic Youth, and Big Black and Meat Puppets were also "college rock" and sounded nothing alike. non-fans are irritatring. |
I hate the term "indie". Makes me puke.
I find no use in categorizing music. Especially as of late. Why not put a band in their own place by describing the sound, rather than comparing it? |
I hate when people discuss their pet peeves about music that is labeled a certain way. Dicks.

??.
|
Don't you mean... ??
|
I hate it when ?? comes in and derails my conversations on this board by making fun of me. I think this is the 3rd time in a row.

I was being sarcastic. Ugh.

Pet Peeves:
No. 1 Fan. You know him. He is just so god damn happy to be seeing his favorite band that he can not resist doing his herky-jerky white boy dance and screaming lyrics. I want to punch these fuckers in the throat. also in the category are the hand dancers. just don't. Mouth breathers Slow walkers, drivers, talkers - slow fucking people in general. Fuck sake. approximately 95% of all the people I have ever met who are in bands. I love music, but if I have to hear one more douchebag tell me about his bands new album, I am going to fucking puke. I don't care. I really don't. I wish you and your band the best of luck, but shut your stupid ugly hole, already. and as always, dirty goddam hippies. |
I breath through my mouth a lot. :( Mainly because my nose is always stuffed up and I don't want to be on allergy meds all the time. I wish I could find a homeopathic cure.
I know what you mean by No. 1 fan |
"In your face" is never manageable in my opinion. People having a good time dancing and making fools of themselves is ok AND entertaining. Doesn't tick me off.

Try a nasal irrigator? works for me.... Mouth breather is not really meant literally, kind of my catch-all term for dummies. At my office there is a LOUD mouth breather, though, and that is really annoying. I think he is a fucking alien. He wants to eat brains or something. |

But I am always stuck right next to No. 1 Fan. Invariably. Gawd. If they were dancing and acting a fool elsewhere, I certainly would not be bothered. I had one fall on me just last night, as a matter of fact. I am a magnet for No. 1 Fan. I think I am just unlucky that way. I get annoyed when it interferes with my enjoyment of whatever band I am out to see. |
