If one more person says 'sellout'...

I've absolutely had enough. Everywhere I go people are calling bands and artists 'Sellouts'. Everytime a band does something someone doesn't like they call them 'a bunch of sellouts'. Its probebly the least intelligent criticism one can can give any art. Why wallow in you own ignorance.

....and what is so bad about making money. Money is not a problem if you dont become obsessed with it and can handle it with dignity (not splashing it around on expenisve cars, 4 houses, extravangant jewels etc, etc).

jon boy 04.10.2007 08:23 AM

i would call them sell outs of they endorsed something, coke or pepsi etc.

unfortunatly a lot of bands dont have control over their own music so it can be used by people to do what they want. not all bands/musicians true but more than i thought.

Washing Machine 04.10.2007 08:25 AM

I would call artists up on it yeah...but avoid the word 'sellout' like the plague.

jon boy 04.10.2007 08:31 AM

yes i dont really like that phrase. its used by too many people especially teenagers and has lost all meaning.

Washing Machine 04.10.2007 08:33 AM

The phase was of course invented for KISS...you can call them sellouts

Inhuman 04.10.2007 08:40 AM

That's what I absolutely hate about Kurt Cobain.

So many people have to make a huge differenciation between mainstream culture and the alternative. So just because a band has a lot of fans and are signed to a major label doesn't make them a sellout. It's fine as long as it doesn't involve hypocrisy. Green Day used to be against the consumer capitalist system and hated major labels, and then signed to one and only had the explanation of "well, we FELT like it. We get to make our own choices". That's what I dislike.

floatingslowly 04.10.2007 08:44 AM

I would be willing to bet that there comes a time in a band's life where they grow sick of eating mac n' cheese for dinner everynight (let alone having second jobs).

Washing Machine 04.10.2007 08:44 AM

Yeah I have no problem with signing to a major if i thought it was a good contract.

My main problem with the word is it gets in the way of any kinda intelligent discussion....

Go To www.ultimate-guitar.com if there is such a thing as message board hell this is it! still its good for tabs but I should really stop reading the articles and comments as they only serve to make me mad.

Quit being such a whiny over-dignified cunt. Who made you the king of what derogatory terms are appropriate for bands? What if a band actually did sell-out? It's not unheard of you, you know.

You're full of hog wash. Hog wash.

I don't even bother checking that site anymore. Even the tutorials are bias. To add to the SHITTY internet communities list:

Youtube
Last.FM
Dailymotion

Hayden has a point. What if a band actually does put the money ahead of their music, or goes against what they stood for before the became a major label artist?

My point is by whining about someone saying something so much it's annoying, you are being just as annoying. It's like all the threads complaining about me or other posters. No one cares. No one is going to stop saying it. Why waste your time?

this is why I tend to stay in the non forum here.

I LOVE to talk music. it's my favorite thing to do, however on the internet it's a different story.

there are so many bands these days that people no longer have all the same likes and dislikes. for the most part this is a good thing, but looking back toward high school, I can't recall ever getting into the same "oh yeah, well YOU suck" type conversations that I can get on a message board while discussing music. there's just very little homogeny of musical tastes anymore.

"sell out" is just an easy cheap-shot that people use when they can't formulate chains of words involving more than one syllable (although it certainly CAN BE applicable).

that's 2, but yeah.

Welcome to Costco, I love you.

Washing Machine 04.10.2007 08:59 AM

I know hardly any band that would do that! Bands make commerical music because usually because they like that music. As strange it may seem to us Nickelback (common target I know) actually probebly enjoy those shiny little musical turds they shit out!...yes a band can "put the money ahead of their music" I suppose. But I can find so many better ways of expressing my dislike for their music before resorting to stupid and boring insults like "What a bunch of fags, they are nothing but a bunch of sellouts now". If someone on this board said that they would get the piss ripped into them....and rightly so.
