My burner just pulverized a cd-r!!!

i was listening to a cd-r i burned with a bunch of albums, and i was listening to beherit and then, a bang went off and the sound of the cd spinning like crazy was fucking overwhelming, i tried to open the tray by pushing the button, but it wouldn't respond; just as i was about to get a clip to press the reset button, the tray gets off a little, so i give it the gentlest pull i can and bam! shards of aluminium and plastic go flying up, the whole disc was shattered; a big piece was caught up in the mechanism so it wouldn't close but it finally came off. the tray can open and close easy now but i don't trust that crap anymore. good thing i only bought the burner two months ago, so i still have my garanty, i can get me a new one, one that doesn't bite.

i'm just grateful it didn't fucked a disc with rare stuff or an actual cd.

this is, by far, the most bizarre thing i have ever experience with a computer, and i had some bad ones before.

might have to do with the fact that i was listening to beherit at the moment!

schizophrenicroom 03.20.2007 12:28 AM

wow, that's weird.

what brand was it? i've been wanting a burner for a while but i have no idea what brand is the best/worst.

Everyneurotic 03.20.2007 12:36 AM

the cd-r was (r.i.p.) a sony

the dvd-rw is a lite-on; my old cd-rw unit was a lg and had it for like 5 years and only recently was it giving me shit; i'm getting an lg now.

SynthethicalY 03.20.2007 12:44 AM

That is freakishly weird. I have never had that happen to me.

cryptowonderdruginvogue 03.20.2007 01:01 AM

hahah
whaaaat?!

Everyneurotic 03.20.2007 01:11 AM

i'm now convinced that it was because i was listening to black metal...i should have gone with my second choice: archers of loaf.

im telling you, most varieties of metal cause stupitidy, accidents and bad luck, not to mention zits. one of the reasons why i avoid it like dogshit.

about the crds, i got a bunch of NEC drives and they are alright-- one was DOA but i exchanged it.

i had never heard of that shit though-- explosions? wow...

terminal pharmacy 03.20.2007 01:49 AM

dubious

Everyneurotic 03.20.2007 01:58 AM

yeah, i'm making a story up so i can start a thread about it and be popular on the internet.

please, love me, love me!!!!

now, i think the rotary thing might have spun out of it's axis, causing the disc to crash into the roof of the burner, which explains why it got stuck and wouldn't open yet the disc kept spinning; then, the tray mechanism put pressure to the jammed disc, which was probably on a funky position, finally succumbing to the pressure and heat from both the spinning and the machine. that's the only way i can explain it. that or vintage beherit is kvlter than i though.

it's fucking haunted man

king_buzzo 03.20.2007 04:51 AM

The combination of high speed CD-ROM drives (52x is an incredibly fast spinning ratio when you think about it... it's 52 times the speed of a normal CD-player!) and cheap, old, or damaged CD-Rs can sometimes cause the discs to explode.

Maybe the CD-R had fell on the ground a few times and had some small, hardly visible cracks on the disc? I'd normally consider sony a decent brand so it's worrying that it could happen with those as well...

jesus christ, thats fuckin mental.

i've had some dodgy experiances with cd-burnres in my time but nothing like that.

where was the crack on your cd? i just remembered i had noticed on the center there was a small line cracked into it.

well, fuck me, there's even a wiki page for it! [thanks pokkeherrie] good thing my dvd rom drive is a little old and is slower than the dvd-rw, i'm going to be chaking my crap out and look for cracks from now on.

Everyneurotic 03.20.2007 12:18 PM
