I would highly suggest you guys check out Thee Oh Sees if you can. Saw them last year. Best live show I've ever witnessed.

Ah! saw place to bury strangers in cinci in september. They were great but blew the fuckin power like 5 times during their set. So I left. It was cool at first then it got annoying haha.

Dude, Thee Oh sees are probably playing ALOT of shows. You HAVE to see them.

San fransico garage psych stuff. Super energetic and nasty and tasteful analog effects. Probably the best live band today in my opinion. Cramps meets Pixies meets b52s meets whatever.

The Oh Sees are good and everything, but I REALLY wish people would stop with the misapplication of the term "psych." It's offensive to me.

His demo's are extremely psychedelic. Or NOISY.

Though I agree with what you mean. I too find it a loaded term most of the time.

But it doesnt have to be applied extremely to the music to make it psych.

Their music is psychedelic in a subtle way. Combination of chord changes, recording quality, and odd usage of sounds definitely set them apart from other typical garage bands. (at least out of the san fran scene, cuz everyone there sounds like this to an extent, except thee oh sees are the kings of that scene)

Maybe I should say, garage punk with a taste of ghostly noise rock?


That said, that's just my opinion and yr an older dude, are there any modern bands you would reccomend me that you think are psych? or do you think music hasnt been psychedelic since the 60s when it was new and now it's just the norm?

Tons of new bands (and post-60s in general) are "psychedelic" to me, but yea, just being "noisy" and having a broader sound palette than more straight garage rock isn't "psychedelic" to me. Again, I like Thee Oh Sees just fine.

Daughters of the Sun are defintiely psychedelic, as are White Hills, Sylvester Anfang II, Sun Araw, Mondo Drag....I could go on and on, really. I guess I am just protective of the term and don't like seeing it becoming too broadly applied (especially when it is a braod enoough brush already and always has been).

80s and 90s had tons of great psychedelia too. I'm no 60s purist.

Random highlight:
We had an after-party for our friends in the Black Lips at the place I was staying at around 2:30 [after the Gayngs/Black Lips/Little Dragon party at Lustre Pearl friday night]
Aziz Ansari and Mischa Barton were present until 6:30am
Ariel Pink showed up but didn't go in the house
Aziz tried to break into Davila666 tour van that was parked in the driveway
He started pulling on handles and running around the van in circles
Had to get him the keys from one of the guys in the band cause I thought he was going to break the door handle

DaveH was there [he stayed with us]
We had a blast

best week ever. Vice and Comedy Central threw down on the free drinks at that Vice party. couldn't feel my face by 3 am. no idea what i was doing / where i was between 4-6. it's like I came out of a portal at 6am when they were kicking us out. remember everything from that point on. including buying a massive hot dog from some gypsies at 6:30am and downing it in 90 seconds.

I know that I
A) did not puke, because i would have tasted it or seen evidence on my person.
B) did not make out with anyone because no lipstick or hickies
C) did not get in a fight because nothing hurt/ no bruises
D) did not get in the crowd/front for OFF or OF, since I wasn't sweaty

so I must have been smoking w33d with Joe from Black Lips... thats the only thing i can think of.

living here honestly I'm glad sxsw is over and so are most of the people I know. it makes work hellish. it can be mad cash though. A couple bartenders where I work were walking with 450 for an afternoon shift and almost 1k for a double.

I didn't party. I worked like a mofo. Saw peter murphy. that's about all.
