Maybe we need a pop music thread to save us all
I don't really know if many of you have a love for all things pop (and when i say pop i mean glittery, fun, hedonistic pop).I got quite inspired by a well respected board member on here(Gl.....Genetic kiss is,i think, his/her username.hehe) who made me think a bit about the tracing of one's own music taste in a personal history of facts, feelings and memories that lead one type of music to another in a seemingly incoherent pattern. The naming and shaming is an easy weapon when you haven't met the glacially glamorous glare of the pop face, so i hope this thread wont attract diatribes about the superiority of (insert music genre of choice here) over the type of music i'm referring to.Discuss........

Hah... Erasure... :) Excellent melodies. Just the right amount of gayness too.
|
Christina Aguilera's Genie In A Bottle brings back memories too...

I recommend everyone download the following for a taster on pop, if you're unaware of this much maligned, obscure, and ultimately better genre.
Sclub7 - Don't Stop Movin' Steps - Tragedy Take That - Back for Good Britney Spears - Toxic Erasure - It doesn't have to be So solid cru - 21 seconds Mis-teeq - all I want Special D - come with me Abba - the winner takes it all Avril Lavigne - complicated The Carpenters - Close to you Madonna - like a virgin Pet shop Boys - West End Girls Busted - Sleepin' with the light .... Oh dear, I could write that list forever. Pop owns yo'. *Edit: You can probably make a fair stab at my age from that list... |
But to be nostalgiacal, A Ha...
|
Black Eyed Peas, lest we forget.
|

I like a lot of 80's pop songs. Especially those by INXS, Duran Duran, Simple Minds, Tears For Fears and some other bands.
|
Inxs in their prime were gods

as someone's sig notes their '95 covers album, Thank You, was ranked in Q mag as the worst record of all time. Thank You is a song by Led Zeppelin. By far the worst cover offered is 911 is a joke though. What about Styx's Big Bang Theory, huh? The Q sycophant writer is just upset that DD fell so far from immaculate pop grace & picks them as an easy target. The first three DD albums (Duran Duran, Rio & Seven and the Ragged Tiger) are the cat's meow. The Arcadia album is sweeeeet & The Power Station ain't half bad either. I have every single Duran Duran single on one data disc. People that dismiss them just because they've sucked since then are missing the point. A lot of artists burn out creatively after three blockbuster genius pop rock records. One can say the same for Tears for Fears' first three albums, although they are not as good as Duran Duran by a longshot & they basically only made three records that anyone really heard. The Pet Shop boys do get some acclaim from critics. The Pet Shop Boys do, however, suck really hard. Samantha Fox is even worse, about as bad as you can get. Sheena Easton is like Kim Gordon next to Samantha Fox. I've never had anything particularly against Cyndi Lauper & I've never really cared for her either. She really wrecked herself with that Capt. Lou wrestling weirdness & has tried in the last few years to be credible with appearances on Howard Stern & the Today show, for instance. I don't care one way or the other about her &/or her music. |

faves of mine: britney's first two christina aguilera's first nsync's no strings attached michelle branch's two so far avril lavigne's two so far some madonna songs (especially 80's) kelly clarckson's latests have some great songs there. M2M!!!! too many songs from the 80's too many dance songs from the early 90's commercial songs from the 90's by the likes of candlebox, sponge, live, bush, etc. hair metal!!! i also love a lot of power pop (cheap trick, big star, plimsouls, local h, marvelous 3, american hi-fi, tsar, etc.) |
The 1980's were the golden age of pop, and gave us six great acts:
Duran Duran A-ha Propaganda The Art of Noise Tears for Fears Heaven 17 We had to wait until the twenty-first century for the next great pop act, The Sugababes. |

They did some quite experimental b-sides, instrumentals with noises and snatches of dialogue. I have a transluscent green 7" of 'Mothers Talk' with free Tears for Fears window sticker! So there! The b-side, 'Empire Building', is an intense track. |
Justin Timberlake's an OK dude. Some good songs.
