God Damn! I Love Sonic Youth!

I go through phases of listening to nothing but sonic youth, then not listening to them for a few months. I am now back in a Sonic Youth phase and it is amazing! They have been my favourite band since i was 13, and i am still amazed at how fucking great they are!!!!!! I come on here mostly because of the nice people here, i forget that it is a SONIC YOUTH message board sometimes.

Sonic Youth I Love You!

Listened to this about 18 times yesterday.

every time i look at my life i think of you
every time i look at you i wonder, what to do
so lets go, go away, go
lets go, i don't want to stay any longer
god knows that you're my brother
got a funny idea there is no other
you know we have to make it really last
have to make it happen, really fast
so lets go, go away, go
lets go, i don't want to stay any longer
if we could just know where we come from
maybe we could figure out something to do
all i know now is we're together and something tells me we might live forever
so lets go, go away, go
lets go, i don't want to stay any longer
every time i look at you i wonder what to do
every time i look at you i wonder what to do
every time i look at you i wonder what to do
every time i look at you i wonder what to do
every time i look at you i wonder what to do
every time i look at you i wonder what to do
every time i look at you i wonder what to do
every time i look at you i wonder what to do
every time i look at you i wonder what to do
every time i look at you i wonder what to do

(P.S) They make almost everything else sound like shit.

screamingskull 12.21.2007 05:32 PM

Mark Linkous is always crying.

Rob Instigator 12.21.2007 05:32 PM

yes. I am going back into a heavy sonic youth kick now. SONIC LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

screamingskull 12.21.2007 05:33 PM

I have not listened to ANYTHING by sonic youth i about 5 months, and last night i did, and it just hit me!

Rob Instigator 12.21.2007 05:35 PM

that happens with me and my favorite bands.

Sonic Youth
beatles
Phish
Butthole Surfers
Dinosaur Jr

I leave them behind for months and listen to other stuff then I try them again and once again I am awestruck by the sheer genius of it all.

screamingskull 12.21.2007 05:36 PM

that was it, i was awestruck! THEY ARE JUST SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOD!!!!!!!!!!

m1rr0r dash 12.21.2007 05:39 PM

ditto...

i didn't discover them until i was 18, but that was at a show in at CBGB's so i don't mind that i didn't get into them as a teenager. i didn't start listening to them heavily until i was 20. that was the last time i saw free kitten. i heard rumors they had a new album and might play... anybody heard anything?

Derek 12.21.2007 05:41 PM

I hate Sonic Youth.

screamingskull 12.21.2007 05:42 PM

If you are being sarcastic then please don't do that in this thread
If you are being sincere then why the fuck are you here?

gmku 12.21.2007 05:43 PM

I find that too. It's almost better not to listen to your favorite bands for a few or several months. You appreciate them even more when you return to them.

To express to this community my utter hatred. I bought all their studio albums, listened to each about 100 times and hated it!

Yes, I'm just messing.

gmku 12.21.2007 05:44 PM

Of course, almost every band I have records of is my favorite band.

m1rr0r dash 12.21.2007 05:50 PM

i do that also.... i mostly just listen to my ipod on shuffle, but then i have one playlist with just about everything thurston and kim have released (you can never hunt down everything) and some of lee's stuff and some free noise jams with jim and nels. sometimes thats the only thing on my ipod. other times i don't listen to them for weeks.

speaking of which, i haven't eaten all day, and i'm going to go put a big powl of pho in my belly.

Derek 12.21.2007 05:50 PM

ha ha ha, i love him, his music is amazing!, but i can't do all that feeling sorry for the poor tortured musician anymore.

m1rr0r dash 12.21.2007 05:55 PM

i usually go with people not bands, cause my favorite people are

kim gordon
thurston moore
lee ranaldo
mick collins
ian svenonius
cut chemist

and to list all the bands those six have been a part of would require much paper....

and now.

Phở

screamingskull 12.21.2007 05:58 PM

See, i go with movements, i first got into the whole hippy thing because of my parents, then it was the Grunge movement where i first discovered Sonic Youth. Then the Riot Grrrl movement, then i had a very big and yucky sad music phase which i am out of now, thankfully.

and now....he's crying even harder.

way to go.

screamingskull 12.21.2007 06:02 PM

His life can't be that bad, he's married and he has money.
Unless he has some sort of Mental Health Problem, which is very probable. In which case he should be taking his meds and staying the hell away from drugs and alcohol.

I go for a mix of movements and people. If there is a band in one movement I like, then I'd probably like other bands in it. If it's someone I think is a genius then I'd obviously check out other projects of theirs.

Anngella 12.22.2007 12:53 AM

That happened to me lately with Nirvana. I found an old mix I made and put it in and was all MMMMM!
Hm. Yeah.

✌➬ 12.22.2007 03:30 AM

I listened today to Hold That Tiger while driving to work, and I was in love with them. I have not listened to them in such a long time.

screamingskull 01.19.2008 12:21 PM

OH MY GOD

drrrtyboots 01.19.2008 02:17 PM

screamingskull 01.19.2008 02:24 PM

I listen to the Youth at least once a week.

drrrtyboots 01.19.2008 02:33 PM

I was listening to bad moon last night, i've still got the chills.

Cantankerous 01.19.2008 02:45 PM

i also go into phases where i listen to sonic youth for weeks and then i get tired of it and don't listen to it...and then i start listening again and it's great etc etc etc

nicfit 01.19.2008 02:48 PM

DAMN I LOVE THEM too!!! for real. Don't listen to them much lately, but a couple days ago I was listening to Female Mechanic Now On Duty.... oooooooohhh, pure love and passion from my brain, heart wathever it is that made me ecstatic...

█████████ 01.20.2008 12:30 PM

God Damn! I Love Running Naked in the Woods!

and sonic youth.

pbradley 01.20.2008 05:16 PM

I've been listening to more SY recently, too. Mostly Sonic Nurse and Goo. I think it was because I drove across California with my brother and he just got into Trees Outside so we played that a lot.

Anyway, Disappearer is a fucking cool ass song. Same with Kim Gordon & The Arthur Doyle Hand Cream and Peace Attack.

Norma J 01.20.2008 05:19 PM

I'm loving Sonic Youth at the moment. There's always love, but now alittle fatuation like.

gmku 01.20.2008 05:34 PM

I've been really into the three 4LP box sets since about last June--Goo, Dirty, and Daydream. I taped them to cassette, and they're never too far from reach. They're good for a music fix when I can't think of what else to play, and I love the covers and extras, especially on Daydream Nation. I love their version of Within You Without You, for example. I also really dig the extra artwork in those boxes.

no, in truth i love the guy, he just isn't as prolific when it comes to side projects or solo stuff as the others. i wish there was more, that's all. i always wish for more sy related stuff...

so really a list of my favorite bands should read:

any band involving any member (current or former) of sonic youth
any band involving mick collins
any band involving ian svenonius
any band involving cut chemist
