Inspiring Writers and Poets ?
Im going to the library again soon and wanted some suggestions on readn material that will really stir me up. What books have really inspired you guys ? that you've re-read a bunch or just taken a lot back from.
|
inspired for sex, murder, rampage, or the monastic life?
|
The Perks of Being a Wallflower, right now I am reading Last Exit to Brooklyn.
|
In high school I did a report on Langston Hughes and fell in love with his poetry. He's definately one of my favorites.
|
dont bother with the perks of being a wallflower.
just read dracula, it is really good and highly recommened! |
I got bored of reading Dracula, might read it again just to see if I missed out something.
|
well i still don't know what kind of inspiration he is seeking. perhaps this kind?

For me, I think the first time reading Frank O'Hara was a real eye-opener, but that seems like a long time ago. Of course my writing does not reflect this at all, but what can you do you know? Anyway I got bored with all of the standard creative writing stuff, especially poetry, I just can't stand writing it anymore. I like to write but there are some things I just can't deal with. I'd rather write analysis essays for my Lit class than write poetry again. I think essays are one of my strong points. |

I am shocked there is a 2nd edition.
|
Quote:
the first one was brilliant. this one has much sexier cover. :p -- hey-- and what edition of mein kampf is that? you like vintage books, huh? |
Quote:
Just like textbooks, they change the cover for more money. Of course vintage books are the best. |

not always. i like to read in bed, and filthy old books that shed particles aren't exactly great in the sack. |
Quote:
That is why you have two books, the first edition, and the latest one. I mean come on. |

I don't think I've even seen an edition of that book that has Hitler's face on the cover. The one posted in this thread makes it seem like you're supposed to pick it up and go, "Now there's an honest-looking man, I just might have to buy this!" It's that old. Anyway, so long as we're posting book covers I would like to put this one out there. I own it, and it is riveting. ![]() That is just one example of the perks you get working in a bookstore. |
and i still dont' know what kind of "inspiration" he wants

I bet Tristan Taormino's first ex-boyfriend is pissed that he didn't get any pooper-action.
|
Maybe these?

ex-boyfriend? she's lesbian, and writes extensively about the use of anal beads. am i revealing too much here about the contents of my personal library? perhaps... btw, she claims to be related to thomas pynchon. |
![]() Inspire a headache, perhaps? |

will that book teach me how to be like the fonz? cos that would be truly inspirational. |

It's a really cute book, I must say. I didn't just get it for the humor factor, I sat down and read it through twice. It has lines like "Fonzie may have a soul of leather, but his heart is made of gold," or something like that. And it talks about how Henry doesn't like being called Fonzie. |
ha ha but he is the fonz!!
i should leave for a while. is it true that you have a birthday coming up in a few hours? |
Quote:
Sure is. It would be cool if I were to win some prize at the student art show tomorrow, considering I'm not getting anything for my birthday. But I highly doubt that will happen. |
Do you have a pay pal account maybe I can send you some money. I do get paid at midnight.
|

owww... if you had an anonymous p.o. box, i'd mail you a present. but seen how this is the internet, asking for addresses is a no-no. maybe i'll email you something downloadable? :D |
Michael Chabon's new book "The Yiddish Policemen's Union"
or his last book, "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay" very inspiring. |
well im outta here-- i'll be back later to join or start your "happy birthday" thread-- and present or no present i hope you enjoy it.
|
Thanks for the offers of money/gifts but I am fine. Actually I'm working on getting rid of some stuff that I already own, so the no presents thing is working out for me this year. I think the only thing I might get is perhaps my mom will offer to pay for a month or two of my Netfix account, which would be a great thing.

very.
everytime i listen to this, i get chills down my spine and i almost want to cry http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lz8c70usujk edit: damnit, the vocals are missing. nevermind |
I agree.
Allen Ginsberg. Allen Ginsberg. Allen Ginsberg. |
when i say inspiring i mean like it makes you want to think, be creative give you some interesting food for thought.
|
ginsberg.
|
I hope I won't be shaking the foundation of this thread when I say "Ginsberg was so-so."
He was okay for a bit, I guess Howl has some good and impressive lines though none of it really speaks to me in any way, but now I'm just completely and utterly sick of him as well as most other Beat poets/writers. |
just for that i am now sending you a dead cat.
