Filthy talk, too. Erin Burnett said "bullshit" the other day. I love this era... :D A classic from 2016 (before the damn election): Fareed Zakaria on Drumpf's bullshit. |

This is classic lawyerism tactics 101.
They know they are fucked, so if they say "release everything" it looks like they are not fucked. Then when DOJ redacts, they can claim victory, or when the whole truth comes out they can continue to bullshit about FBI plants and witch-hunts etc etc etc. Of course they are going to scream "release it all". |

there is an interesting article in today's financial times that compares biden to keir starmer and praises the value of "boring" candidates who appeal to those who are not obsessed with politics.
there are references to josé mourinho, no drama obama vs "maverick" mccain (article doesnt use the word maverick but i remember queen wasilla calling mccain that), and various other presidents and prime ministers throughout history. there is also embedded in it a comparative theory of the electorate in the usa/uk (and the media as well). it's a good piece actually, whether one agrees with it or not... Why Biden and Starmer keep beating the critics Political obsessives demand that leaders should be inspirational, but swing voters aren’t so needy Janan Ganesh https://www.ft.com/content/55094fb7-...f-7b5c9797ed2b |

Aye, depends how you define "leftist". There's a clear distaste amidst thee normies for wokeness, despite "wokeist" attempts to encourage a world of less descrimiation. But I'm all with you if you're referring to tankies by "leftist". What I find interesting is the relativism of it all. As a Canadian, our center is nearly the justice dem/progressive wing of the US. At least for now. We have our own issues now (*cough* FREEDOM *cough*) |

re: woke: i no longer know wtf it means. it used to mean something, then it became a performative social media thing devoid of much meaning, and now it's apparently an insult for some? less discrimination of course would be great, and there are social structures of oppression that must be changed of course, but i don't think maoism will free us from them. and yes, the usa used to be a center-right country (i place sorta center-left here), but a lot of the population is now flirting with outright fascism. i am just a "liberal" which now apparently means commie in fox news parlance. but no, i'm a liberal, really. very passé, i know, but that's where i am, roughly, that's my home, broadly speaking, in the philosophical sense, not the popular label sense. btw (i originally came here to post this) palin just lost in alaska!!! hahahahahahaaa! glorious... anyway, i don't understand very well the canadian political landscape, i'm afraid. our other resident canadian (skuj) is more concerned with usa politics in this thread. so what's going on over there? last i heard trudeau was getting ready to sell lng to europe... |
Didn't "woke" become what Repukes call people who are slightly educated about things? Like, they have to invent a silly word for it now?
(And I must confess, I'm not able to read Inhuman correctly. Is he/she for The Freedom People?) In Canada, on Sep 10, Pierre Fucking Freedom Pollievre will be elected the leader of The Cons. Many so-called experts here say that this means The Cons will lose the next election. I'm not so sure. We often appear to be pretty smug in Canada, and we think MAGAism can't happen here. But I see MAGAism all around me. God help us. |
I generally think of "woke" as being aware that the United States is built on a cemetery full of racist and misogynistic skeletons, among other variations. The "woke" people want to atone and rebuild and create a stronger more humanistic and inclusive foundation. The people complaining about "wokeness" think everything is just fine and nothing should be changed. The act of rebuilding better is an attack at their livelihood.

One time at the lunch table, after Obama had mentioned it in a speech, my grandfather asked us what "woke" meant and I started laughing out loud. That reaction probably scared him off wanting to know.

no, it's kinda like what happened to the term "politically correct" back in nineteenclacketyclack. it became just a game of words. the word woke is as old as moses, but then twitter happened, etc. wash, rinse, repeat. Quote:
mmmm after reading your post about who those people are i think you might a need a new eyeglass prescription? :o Quote:
damn. if canada falls, where will we run to when the shit hits the fan here? the world is getting scary and i wish i could believe steven pinker that we're all enlightened now :( |

Maybe this is bad timing, because we are in the midst of a mass-murder/manhunt as I type. Trump spewed forth last night. Naturally, he had no real defense for The Raid, but The (hopefully dwindling) Faithful lapped it up. Biden is vicious, the FBI are evil, etc etc. Dude, shit already hit the fan there, majorly. But I still have faith in America: Surely the people who still embrace this MAGAshit are in the minority? We have our lost minority here also. In 6 days from now Canada will celebrate a MAGAlike milestone of sorts. But our next election in 2025 gives ample time for people to shake their heads and come to their senses. I hope. |
liz truss beat rishi sunak for british pm.
not been following this contest too closely but the agenda seems more debt for tax cuts and spending increases to revive the economy, and price caps to provide energy relief. - a trump appointee just granted trump's request for a special master in his espionage/treason case (but her emails) |

Yeah, this one really pisses me off. It's going to become a circus, just like every other Trump Fuckup. |
rus declares it will cut off gas to europe as long as sanctions continue
(clearly their "technical problems" were bullshit) euro/usd fell hard today, as low as 9.88 (climbing back slowly after that, @.993 right now), and it looks tough in europe, not just for consumers, but also industry... but i think europe can adapt by diversifying (sticking to nuclear, importing lng, speeding up renewables, hanging on to coal as needed), while russia will have it much worse as it fall backwards politically and technologically and becomes a chinese vassal. |

I'd like to stay optimistic, but my optimism and political reality tend to stray from one another once elections come. However I DO think most of us find PP repulsive scum that has barely a plan to do anything except reverse the course of this country. His audience is older lifelong conservative voters, the HONK HONKS, and misguided young men. Trudeau carries a lot of baggage these days so will be interesting to see if he runs again in 2025 (I think it's totally possible to see Freeland step up). Jagmeet IMO still has the best plans but people will be scared to vote their heart and that's what NDP needs. |

i missed this in the news because of the holiday here, but chile rejected their proposed new constitution with 62% of voters saying "no".
-- eta: my go-to publication for global matters attempts an explanation here: https://www.economist.com/the-americ...w-constitution please note, i've often polled "locals" on some of these articles, and they don't always agree with the assessments featured in "the economist", so take the above link with a grain of salt. but it was certainly a resounding defeat, 62-38. oh and in more immediate news i saw an alert that boric had fired some members of his cabinet today. see: https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world...ss/ar-AA11xhsx --- so i checked out some of the sources and found video of "las indetectables" pulling the chilean flag out of their assholes haahahahahaaaaaaa ("el hoyo" they say). ![]() i was hoping it would be actually funny but it was just lame and a bit tragic. there is a video with some supporters saying that "it was a metaphor" and the right only understand things literally, but cmon lololol this is just shooting yourself in the ass. oh wait, it was the mcs of the event itself, trying to say idk what. apparently this was part of a "family event" in a public venue, and they had kids and idiots in the audience, so big fail. in the band's youtube comments (they have a whole different show recorded) some opponent snarkily thanks them for "sinking the approval." anyway it looks like chile still needs a post-pinochet constitution... hopefully shorter than 170 pages. |
beto is running for texas governor polling at 7% behind abbott. the gap was 5% in july. im not an expert in texas politics, but couldn't democrats find someone else with better chances? or is this as good as it gets?
eta: maybe someone here wants to read this: https://www.texastribune.org/2022/09...e-rural-texas/ i couldn't finish it, lol. |

One must wonder why Trump wanted all this at his house, and I cannot help but wonder if the FBI/DOJ has some evidence regarding this. Is it conceivable that Trump has been under some kind of surveillance? |
