The first time I saw it I never really got it. Nothing seemed to happen and given the title it all seemed pretty un-mean. But it's a film that's grown on me since then to become one of my all-time favourites. The only criticism I can really level at it is that it's perhaps a bit too close to its influences at times. Bits of it are like straight up homages to the nouvelle vague and neo-realism which I don't think is as true of his later films. But there's a kind of punk energy to Mean Streets. It's like a defining statement. As though he never expected to make another movie again so squeezed everything he could into it. |

![]() This movie was hilarious. Emilio just sold the part so well. There's just such a comedic nihilism there. And Harry Dean Stanton can be so confusing as an actor. He'll do a ton of regular movies, and then something like this. How does that happen? |

Admittedly, the Hunger Games. 6/10. I had never read the books at all so I didn't have any idea what to expect

You're right, the opening of LDV is brilliant but my favourite scene in that film is probably the visit to the 'miracle' with the children or when Mastroianni first sees the young girl at the restaurant. But all of his films have those little, almost inconsequential moments which somehow stick with you: the snowball fight or the nun climbing the tree in Amarcord; Gelsomina performing for the children in La Strada; etc. |
