One of the few Christmas movies I can bear. But that's underselling it. It's bloody brilliant. Such a raw and compassionate experience. Gets better with each viewing. I love how it traverses that thin line between tragedy and comedy with ease. And it's among the few movies that manage to portray the concept of a found family with such finesse. RIP Satoshi Kon.

Queer (2024)

It was my first time to the theatres in years. I oughta see more movies.

How was it? I really like what I’ve seen of the director’s work.

I really enjoyed it (as a white gay guy), but I think certain audiences may not. I think the title "Queer" may mislead people unfamiliar with Burroughs to expect more inclusivity. But I thought the acting and overall atmosphere of the film were great. The Nirvana tunes seemed like an odd choice to me but somehow worked.

Nirvana made an EP with Burroughs so it makes sense for them to be on the soundtrack

Classic

Last film I watched was Red Beard. If you aren't familiar: it's a period drama about a doctor from a wealthy background, going to work in a poor neighbourhood, set in 19th century Japan. It was made in the mid 60s and was directed by Akira Kurosawa, and it is one of his best.

A mix of time off from work for the holidays as well as a wrist injury that has resulted in surgery has given me a lot of movie time lately.

Adaptation

Need to rewatch it at some point. I think that's one of the last movies in which I found Nic Cage unironically good and moving. I'm barring Into The Spider-Verse here, because it's a voice-only performance and a decidedly comedic one at that. Uh, maybe Lord Of War too - but I haven't seen it in ages. Anyway, he was pretty damn amazing in Adaptation. Great movie to watch if you're struggling with the artistic process too.

I Saw The TV Glow, worth a watch if you like Greg Araki's film Nowhere or Twin Peaks.
It's also part of the curious modern trend of independent films directedby women where the lead characters have no (or almost no) meaningful relationships.

I'm glad someone else saw it eventually! It's pretty thematically consistent for the main characters to be lonely and isolated like that - I haven't seen Schoenbrun's earlier film, but I've gathered it was made on a very low budget, so this might be a hangover from that.

This had not occurred to me but very interesting.

I preferred We’re All Going to the World’s Fair, which really left me feeling fucking deeply unsettled, but TV Glow was pretty good too

A side effect of David Lynch's death is that some of his films are available on national tv websites for several days.
I watched Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me this sunday, and again on monday.
Gonna try to watch it again and again to see if it does something, whether it's getting me bored or disturb me. I would not have done it with one of his movies I enjoy more (Mulhllland Drive, Blue Velvet, Eraserhead)

I admire David Lynch, and his uncompromising view towards his art, but man, his films are boring to me.

Beyond boring. Pointless, which is the worst thing any art can be.

Mulholand Drive - could care less. horrible people doing horrible things, as if thats new or interesting. I hate hearing other people's dreams. Why would I want to see a film of it?

Lost Highway - I turned this boring shit off less than halfway.

Twin Peans Fire Walk with Me - I fucking hated Twin peaks and I hated this stupid fucking sequel film. Notice how few PoC there are in any Lynch films. (Richard Pryor was "in" Lost Highway)

Wild at Heart - Another boring movie about shitty white people. Boring, stupid, insipid film.

Blue Velvet - everyone I knew that loved this film seemed a potential predator waiting to happen. Boring fucking shit about shitty people doing shitty things. Who fucking cares? not me.

Eraserhead - the OG film of being weird for weird's sake. Pointless plot. Terrible acting. famous for being so shitty that people think its deep.


That's my rant. may Lynch rest in peace and may I never have to see any of these films again.

Well, at least you like Mullholland Drive a little bit, Rob.


American-obsessed-with-race cliche, y'all
White people are just the worst isn't it? Look at Sonic Youth, 4 boring whities making an LP called the whitey album. Where are the racial quota police when you need them? Best not mention their whiter than a can of dulux paint music videos.

You’ve got me muted, I know, but I don’t necessarily think something like a band’s makeup is comparable to a director’s entire filmography in this respect.

A band forms, and usually that’s about it. Maybe a new/replacement member here and there over a decade or so, but normally it’s one and done, I’d say.

David Lynch made movies with casts of 30, 40, 50+ people for damn near 50 years. It is a bit strange that, throughout that half-century, there were next to no people of color represented. I think it’s a valid thing to note when considering his work as a whole.

That said, I really like David Lynch, and while I’m too old to stomach that kind of discomfort viewing much anymore, I do respect him and I think his best films are some of the best films of all time.

Do The Right Thing

a few weeks back I watched a great movie, now I don't remember the title anymore
It's Spanish language, might have been from Spain or from South-America
The main plot is about a police officer investigating a cold-case. main plot is good, albeit the ending was a bit disappointing
But it's the sub-plot that matters, about the relationship between the (male) police officer, and his (female) boss.


Think it was an Oscar winner or nominated for it.




Yesterday I started watching On The Waterfront, but I got bored by it. Might finish it in a few days. Watched old episodes of QI on youtube instead.



And a few days ago, How to Marry a Millionaire. Wow, totally different from what I had expected even though I didn't know what to expect. But highly entertaining, and funny as well. The beginning is weird though, it starts with a very long musical piece where you only see the orchestra playing which doesn't really belong to the story. Perhaps it made sense back in the fifties ...

Music is aural. film is visual. Music is colorless. Black audiences didn't know Bobby Caldwell was a white man (the record label hid his face in the ads and cover) and they felt his music deeply.

White kids didn't know Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers were black, until they saw him live on TV.


film is a visual medium, and if you look at movies by black filmmakers, they include white characters, latino characters, etc. because they try to reflect reality. Many white directors create whitewashed landscapes where PoC are either non-existent, or they are in positions of servitude. Lynch is one of these.
