was gonna say something else but since you’re gonna be in dc you might want to visit bawlmor. it’s a short commuter train away. — eta: weird/freaky this is “dawn davenport”... from nashville https://mobile.twitter.com/dawndavenporttn?lang=en bawlmore’s dawn davenport was way more entertaining https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bpYTkavEt20 |

Wait what? I missed something here. |

that fine city (“the city that reads!” it calls itself) is only a stone’s throw away from dc. well, in american scale anyway. accessible by cheap commuter train from union station. not that touristy except for some shitty inner harbor, but full of hidden gems—like the visionary art museum. great markets to eat seafood, both lexington (huge) and cross street (small) poe’s burial place and last house are there (never went to the house. was ina a neighborhood right out of the wire back then. probably still might be. ask about the “poe homes”) catch an orioles game, likely much cheaper than the nationals (but equally as boring) check out their glorious tacky little italy and vaccaro’s pastry shop, where the obese get obeser if the ottobar is still open and has a good show, that used to be a great little spot hampden though has gone from working class neighborhood (home to “pecker”) to hot hipster quarters for the gentrifier mob. see pigtown before it’s all gone. last: divine plays dawn davenport in female trouble. but there is a dawn davenport news person in nashville. sure it’s a sign! ha ha ha ha |

Oh! Sorry *belm* I hadn't planned of going to Baltimore but could easily persuaded. I could relive The Wire. A pasty white boy shouting "5-0 COMIN!" "RE-UP NEEDED!" |

also, in summer, dc is hordes and hordes of tourists. ugh! (youre not a tourist though, i can tell that about you lol) however back in the day there was h.r. 57, a little nonprofit dedicated to jazz preservation. maybe still there? back in the day dc was a jazz town. had a jazz radio. lotsa jazz venues. i’d check to see. i could spend weeks at the national gallery of art—both west (old) and east (modern) wings. plus the sackler and freer galleries. and the hirshhorn, sculpture gallery included. for a foreign visitor ofc the history museum, the nmai and the african american ones, and the holocaust... if you dare. the beauty of smithsonian museums is not that theyre the greatest collections and most recent exhibits—it’s that they’re the nation’s attic and free of charge and open to the public (bag check required these days though) but anywyay, baltimore is “real”and not chockful of lawyers and government employees who produce nothing but paperwork. baltimore has grit, and a working class, and a different atmosphere altogether, like... corner bars! no dc corner bars lolol. and yeah parts are dangerous. but a day/day-and-a-half visit is well worth the train ride +ubers. maybe there’s nothing there and it’s just nostalgia talking (i spent one of my best summers ever there, so tasty and good). but no, i think bawlmor is something else for sure. catch it before the gentrifiers wreck it like they did new york. oh also philly on the way? visit dee dennis mack and charlie and of course frank reynolds haaa haaa haa philly is cool too has their “arts distict”and shit also, cheesesteaks. mmmm cheesesteaks. and oh, hoagies, mamma mia... |

![]() went to watch this at theater with wife on Tuesday. 10:30 PM screeniong, hoping for what the reviews said was a great and tight action film. HOLY FUCK were they wrong. The film could have used a 30-45 minute trim, ESPECIALLY any and all scenes involving that wooden fuck that plays SuperMan, Cavill. he was fucking brutal to listen to and watch, and ruined the fucking movie. GRADE A sux fvrom this bastard dipshit. I really really liked the last two MI films, but this one was not up to the previous efforts. Plus, tom cruise cannot hide his fat 50 year old face enough. he looks at times like a doughy bitch, probably because he had to finish filming after breaking his leg doing a stunt. |
Quote:
dammit man, and i was gonna ask how was your barfday i hope you at least ate some cangrejo to make up for that fiasco |
Birthday was awesome. took day off, watched that disappointing MI film on tuesday, stayed up til 4 AM, slept on my B day until noon, woke up and had a sushi feast at Sushi Miiyagi here in houston, then went record shopping (had not done so in months) and then to Bun B's listening party at Johnny Dang's jewelry store.

nice! you more than made up for it

Deadpool 2 was fun and funny.

I watched Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, mostly because Netflix scheduled them for removal more than anything.
|
Quote:
Removal? I just saw TDK pop up again around the 10th anniversary! Wonder if this has something to do with the DC streaming service that is certain to offer a bunch of steaming shit like Titans (fuck Titans) Please don’t take Batman Begins and Darin Knight and DKR away from the world and lump it into your shitty online shitiverse, DC. Please |
I just re-added The Dark Knight back to my watch list, and it still says available until Sept 1st 2018

Dark Knight and Batman Begins are both streaming right this very second on Netflix. No Dark Knight Rises, but the first two are definitely there. Just checked. I just hope they don’t become part of some exclusive service because fuck that. |
I agree, but what i'm saying is Netflix doesn't keep everything they add there forever, and both are slated to be no longer listed starting tomorrow. It's not some "exclusive service thing", at least not to the extent that i've ever heard, it's just their standard shuffling things in and out. Everyone has today to watch them, before they need to find the two somewhere else.

Has anyone on here seen the film adaptation of last exit to Brooklyn?
|
I have but it didn't leave much of an impression on me.
|
Hmm, that's what I thought. The reviews all seem good for it etc but I'd almost prefer the keep the book in mind and nothing else.
Reason I ask is cos I'm looking for a film set in New York for film night tomorrow. Pretty much all the classics I've seen already so I'm just trying to find that gem I haven't seen. However! Just looking and there are two I haven't seen. Shaft and Saturday Night Fever. Gonna be one of the two I reckon. |
Saturday Night Fever is one of my all-time favourite films. Too easily written off as a disco film, it's much more than that. Shaft is an ok period-piece but actually quite boring. Across 110th Street is similar but better, imo.
Some other great NY films that might have gone under your radar: The original Taking of Pelham 123 The Wanderers - everyone knows The Warriors but The Wanderers would be great for a NY film night. The original Maniac - very raw early 80s slasher film with a great sleazy Times Square vibe. Even more left-field, the documentaries Paris is Burning, Bill Cunningham's New York and Precinct Seven Five. |
Great. Now I'm in a dilemma between Wanderers and SNF
|
SNF is the better film but The Wanderers is a PERFECT choice for a NYC film night with friends. And if anything The Wanderers has an even better soundtrack.

Yeah, see, here’s where I’ll drop some nerd knowledge on you: DC is starting an exclusive streaming service early this month (September), where original shows will be available and DC movies will be available and even comics. I’m just saying I hope DC isn’t pulling its properties because it only wants to offer them on the DC service. I love DC, but even I would not buy that service. |
^^ watch killer of sheep
^^ watch i am not your negro speaking of motherfuckers, sam jackson does the voiceover on i am not your negro motherfucker :D |

Gotcha, I was not aware of that because for 95% of the superhero/comic movies, I couldn't give much of a crap about. I have some soft spot for the Batman movies from Burton's up to Nolan's. Even the bad 90s ones. |
john huston’s THE NIGHT OF THE IGUANA (1964)
really great adaptation of a tennessee williams play RICHARD BURTON! SUE LYON! AVA GARDNER! DEBORAH KERR! fucking great. the transfer i saw (on filmstruck) did not seem great and i dont know why. but the story, dialogue, the pace, the performances— hell the fuck yeah. here is a cast photo ![]() |
Quote:
Some of them are pretty fun now. The Marvel ones at least. I think Thor: Ragnarok was one of the most genuinely funny movies of 2017, and Infinity War was great fun. But yeah. It’s getting a bit much. Or already was. Not going to lump Nolan in with these films because his movies are Nolan movies featuring characters of comic book origin, not comic book movies. Honestly. Soft spot for Burton’s Batfilms might not stand a 2018 viewing. They don’t hold up well. The mid-‘90s ones need not be mentioned. |

Have never seen it, for some reason. One I've always wanted to, though. |

So what did you end up watching? |
Quote:
Went with The Wanderers. Hmm, for the most part I enjoyed it. However, I felt like it didn't know what it wanted to be. From the incredibly dark scenes with the ducky boys (so bizarre), to the comedy of the football scene it was up and down. Karen Allen was great in it though. Then that bit with the Dad "we've killed him! Let's go!!" I mean I'm not looking for realism here but good lord! One of the friends who had already seen Saturday night fever said that this was more depressing than SNF. Dunno if I saw it as depressing. There were elements of it but not overly depressing. |
Quote:
Shit, sorry. I've never picked up on anything depressing in it. Poignant maybe, but not depressing. There's actually a book out about The Ducky Boys, who were apparently a real gang. Ace Frehley from Kiss also talks about being a member in his autobiography. And the book the film was based on, by Richard Price, is literally my all-time favourite novel. But I love the film in its own right. "Don't fuck with the Wongs." |

Don't apologise! He's an odd one anyway so take no notice of his opinion. I don't. The wongs bit was funny I'll say that. Like I said before, for the most part I enjoyed it. Others not as much. The football scene when the ducky boys turn up do you reckon that was a The Birds reference? |
