Oscar Wilde was so pretentious, everyone who ever reads anything by him becomes pretentious.

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 06.19.2008 12:35 PM

I voted 5-6 because I have a lot of friends that I hang out with only once in a while so they only see me as some cool guy, which they emulate to others, which goes to my head.

Catachresis as a social phenomenon is fascinating. The proliferation of the word 'logic' fascinates me; its lay definition suggests something to which everyone can appeal. A quick survey of your average office politics suggests that 'logic' means little more than 'emotional investment' (i.e. nearly entirely the contrary of its actual definition).

The process of effacement (the Nietzsche/ structuralist/ Derrid-ian lovehorse) makes criticising the misappropriation of words troublesome, surely?

I only half-understood that last sentence. My mind got sidetracked by the realization that Derrida's name in any form sounds like music. Here a da, there a da, everywhere a...

I'm also a huge fan of PBR. It's immensely easy to chug and dirt cheap to boot. Definitely my type of brew.

naming yourself after a play by ariel dorfman is not pretentious unless you didn't read or see the play performed and are just trying to appear sophisticated. yeah that would be pretentious. or the movie-- fine.

then again this could be about schubert, right?

the argument is about whether new bands can be called post punk

i say NO, because the term is used solely to describe bands that came directly after the "punk explosion" in the 70s and because there is no specific SOUND associated with post punk, bands today cannot be classified as post punk because the term is used to describe an era.

acousticrock87 06.20.2008 03:00 AM

Is postmodern art/literature technically a style, not an era? I thought it was, but now that I was about to use it for my point, I'm not sure.

Cantankerous 06.20.2008 03:01 AM

postmodernism is technically STUPID, but don't get me started

✌➬ 06.20.2008 03:03 AM

Talking about postmodernism in a thread is pretentious.
