it's nothing like any of the old time relijun stuff that i've heard.

when i saw him he was using a saxophone to make sounds and using his mouth to make noises into the microphone.

guess it's something like the most noisy (and quite boring, to me) "avant" snippets on OTR albums...

Well, on paper that could be anywhere from awful to great for me. I liked the live recording I heard of him. If I don't like it on Tuesday then I dare say no-one else in the room will like it either.

Lightning Bolt are two sweat-drenched men disguised as human but are truly jesus underneath. Yes, two jesus'.

The weekends over, my friends, for I anyway. Yesterday we went to the local markets and got some old containers/tins for cakes, sugar, coffee, flower, from like the 50s or earlier, aswell as some frames and some spaghetti bowls etc. Happy with that.

And your thoughts on them both are?

Ah yes...well, it was a bit of an odd gig in the end as it happens. It was put on by my friend Carl and it was really, really badly attended. I think there were maybe 2 actualy paying customers. So there was me, Carl, two friends of ours plus the two paying punters plus the bands plus the soundman...

Motor Ghost played first (Alex Neilson + Ben Reynolds) and they were really, really ace. They did a guitar/drums free type thing but they threw elements of traditional song in there which was ace. Arrington De Dionyso joined them for a bit and they did a bit of three way improv which was nice.

De Dionyso did a bit of solo Bass Clarinet which was decent...I quite liked it anyway, and then Ignatz played. His set sounded quite murky though and he only played 10-15 minutes or so...it was alright. Then De Dionyso came back and did some throat singing into the bell of his clarinet and into a snare drum which was interesting.

I enjoyed it but Motor Ghost were especially ace. It's a bit hard to judge the others because it was all a bit casual...sort of "ok, do you want to play for a bit?", "shall we play together for a bit?" kind of thing. I'd like to see a full Ignatz set to judge properly.

I enjoyed the bass clarinet part of De Dionyso's set in London, but after that it just became rather uninspired. It seemed to be a case of showing off how many unusual musical instruments he owned without actually doing anything very musical with them. I wouldn't rush to see him again.

Iain 05.30.2007 06:52 AM

What else did he play in London? He didn't actually play all that long last night and it was in two sets so that probably made it easier to swallow.

sonicl 05.30.2007 07:14 AM

I'm afraid that the performance left too little of a lasting impression on me for me to remember much about what instruments were used. There was a Jews harp, and there was a sheet of tin foil.

Iain 05.30.2007 07:16 AM

Ah, he did't play Jew Harp last night. Shame, I like the Jews Harp. I saw a sheet of foil in his Clarinet case. I wondered what that was for!

My mom's 60th birthday is on Saturday so I'll be driving back tomorrow to celebrate with the fam.

And I'll be seein' my hometown friends while I'm back.
