My 82 year old father-in-law posted this on facebook recently: For best kale smoothie: 1) Fill blender with ice 2) Place kale in trash 3) Pour rum in blender 4) Add fresh fruits 5) Blend well 6) Enjoy. |
made vegan gumbo yesterday.
with asparagus and bok choi. y'all southern bells would punch me in the face. turned out nice I have to say. |
The wife and I went over to Toomey Starks, Louisiana for lunch Wednesday. Our shrimp poboy, boudain balls and onion rings was well worth the drive!

i seriously need to move there Quote:
i don't think there's an official recipe for gumbo unless it's fake. i mean gumbo is basically a pot of everything. so i'll say you're true to the spirit of the thing. next time try to add some sausages though :D ***** Quote:
sounds great! but you can feed the kale to the pigs or chickens and later you can make bacon or fried chicken. === **** look what i found on wikithing: Gumbo z'herbes[edit] Gumbo z'herbes, served with filé powder and hot sauce When Catholics were expected to abstain from eating meat during Lent, a meatless variety of gumbo, known as gumbo des herbes (literally "gumbo of the herbs" and shortened to gumbo z'herbes), was often served. This variety combined a large number of greens – typically including turnips, mustard greens, and spinach.[10] The greens were cooked to mush and strained through a sieve to produce a thick green liquid. Preparation for this variety of gumbo was time-consuming, and as Lenten restrictions have relaxed, the dish has become less popular.[10] It is very rarely served in restaurants.[11] In modern times, ham or crabmeat is occasionally added to this type of gumbo. Gumbo z'herbes may have originated with the French, Germans, or West Africans.[12] It has similarities to the French dish potage aux herbes ("soup with herbs"), as well as to the African callaloo.[12] The meatless dish also bears striking resemblance to a dish often eaten in Germany on Maundy Thursday. German Catholics, obeying the Lenten rules, often served a stew made of seven different greens on this date.[11] |

yeah it's basically a restlessen. got a friend of mine a job in service at the restaurant. he's a free-jazz impro concert and festival organizer and he'll invite some nola musicians next month to play in the garden of the restaurant. Gonna make a real deal gumbo with some local equivalent for andouille. it's not so much about sausage or meat i think... the stock is where it's at. Quote:
ohhh. now i want a po boy. fuck, street food here in vienna is so bad. i'd kill for a decent bosna. not some fucking ridiculous hot dog with käsekrainer. |
holy shit, that po boy. And the bread looks scrumptious. Sock of sandwiches being ruined by poor bread.
i heated up some red pepper/tomato soup (trader joes sale) and made a grilled cheese on sourdough... ultimate comfort food |
because i'm single this week, and i'm not bothering to cook, i had a peanut butter/raisin sandwich on whole wheat and a piece of celery. boring as fuck.
BUT THEN, i ate this whole heirloom tomato, like a big yellow taxi, on my right hand like an apple, the seasalt pinched between teh fingers of the left one, over the sink so it could drip freely, and it was so goddamn great and savory and spectacular, and later the chickens ate the leftover middle like a red horde of huns. |
this morning it was cold (hey, it's the desert) so i roasted a purple cauliflower. it is beautiful and the purple got darker in the oven (35' @ 400F). i'm eating the whole thing. no seasoning, just a thin coat of olive oil. so good.

Nice. The young beauty brought home two eclairs last evening for breakfast this morning. Yum. I don't know what I'm going to eat for lunch, but I am damned hungry. Sometimes I go home and make a burger. I can't do that every day, though, or I'll start to look like J. Wellington Wimpy. |
friend took me to cracker barrel this morning. i shoved pancakes into my face, and their hashbrown casserole. no regrets.
i'm feeling sort of meh today, didn't sleep well, but i had some chamomile tea and chicken and waffles just now |
funny thing, i had teh same problem, couldn't sleep till 4am, then up at 6, today gone down the drain
just ate a the last slice of whole wheat bread with olive oil and a slice of queso fresco, yellow heirloom tomato on top. not indecent. i still feel like crap though, just not-hungry. but it was tasty. maybe i should focus on that. |
I had a nice black forest ham sammich for lunch. A few chips. Coffee with cream.
A real workingman's lunch. |
both your meals sound great. i was up until 5, woke up at 7:55, then finally took a nap bit before i went out. i still feel pretty meh.
thinking for during the game i'll make some pasta or something. |
the ham: was it boar's head? because that would be good pig.
schizo: what game is that? i'm sure it's not argentina/uruguay i don't want to nap because i'm hoping to reenter the circadian cycle at the right point-- long story w/ the internet only available in the day now. |
cavs/warriors, haha.
only during the day? yeah, i don't want to nap and then i'm up all night. last thing i need. |
yeah, it's satellite & it's weird. i just changed by "bonus hours" from 2am-1pm to 8am-6pm. a real crap system but it's all i got until either i move or elon musk builds his orbital internet
cav/warriors - what sport is that? baseball? (it's baseball season yea?) == eta-- basketball! had no idea that was still going on. i thought it was over in the spring. bha ha ha. |
Last night all we ate for dinner was French soft cheese and rosemary crackers. And wine. It was all we wanted.
|

haha, yes it is indeed basketball. either tonight or thursday (i think) will be final game depending on tonight. my baseball team did win today though oh god one of my last meals in miami was baked brie... it was so perfect. |

some butter lettuce would go well with that. or belgian endive, but that's a winter thing. |
made an omelet of sorts with swiss chard, spinach, turkey sausage, peppers and onions. it was delightful. poured sriracha all over it.
|
oh damn damn damn you're making me hungreeeeeee!!!!
i've just eaten watermelon. and it was delicious and all but... the imaginary smell of turkey sausage and those onions and greens.... YUMM |
oh i want watermelon. a little sprinkle of salt... ahhh.
|
sorry, none left.
after reading about your omelet i went and ate the rest, ha ha |
My diet has changed quite a bit since i moved in with my girlfriend. Dinners now included chicken that was made IN THE OVEN, a lot more brown rice, quinoa, aspargus, a lot more fish, salads, n other healthy shit too. Its reslly nice.
But right now i had some leftover fried rice. |

that looks delicious, oh man. what's all in there?
|
Quote:
from the look of it: farmer's cheese, tomato or red bell pepper, bit of basil, olive oil, black olives?, red onions, another herb i can't identify from the distance (looks like dill) and something that looks thin/transparent like a parchment paper -- "farmer's cheese" is just my broad english word for some sort of unripened cheese like queso fresco-- though the definition and actual products vary widely-- could be feta as well im suspecting that's it because notice how it holds its shape instead of melting even in the parts where it turns gold |
hm. i think i have all that, too. if i weren't lazy from the heat.
|

just make the same without putting in the oven. the onion can be pre-washed then marinated in a bit of vinegar/oil easy |
Last night. Red peppers stuffed with quinoa. Mmm grap tomatoes, corn, black beans, pepper jack cheese, and feta cheese...delicious.
|
oh that sounds delicious. i'll eat anything stuffed in a pepper.
i was out most of the day, then i came home and made a salad with spring mix/quinoa/peppers/jalapenos/red onion. tossed with some feta cheese and vinegar. it's not much but it's good. |
mang. i ate a soon-to-expire buffalo jerky for breakfast. then i had a whey shake. then i had more jerky. then i ate 1/2 a piña. tasty piña but without my accomplice i don't bother cooking much.
piña is good though ![]() |
i sort of scalded the roof of my mouth the other day so eating pineapple is currently painful. tried this morning and yeesh. the jalapenos i just ate didn't help.
buffalo jerky is awesome |
it would have been but this was mixed with cranberry so it was like a fat-free pemmican (real pemmican not the brand). good ingredients just spongy texture and too much sugar for jerky proper.
owww! mouth... wha's good for that...rinse with saltwater? |
just had a salmon burger (not that great but it nourishes me)
and sautéed broccoli with olive oil and soy sauce and last i ate 1/4 of a pineapple maybe i'll need green tea soon |
Had the best Cuban pork panini for lunch. Damn.
|

yeah, i rinse with a cup of warm water/salt/cayenne pepper/garlic. makes my breath awful but it helps the pain. i cut up an avocado (surprise surprise; they're on sale) and put some pico de gallo in there. then had a bowl of pasta with pesto sauce and chicken. i'm still hungry. |
went to the supermarket. w00t!
i got blueberries. i got raspberries. i got ripe avocados and red juicy tomatos. i got green onions. i got bright-red, mustardy-tasting radishes. i got a red cabbage. i got watercress! i got a pound of grass-fed beef, which should go somewhere. for lunch i ate another salmonburger, an avocado with salt in its own skin, a couple of hot hot radishes, 2 exploding tomatos with sprinkled cumin. real easy, real lazy, i didn't want to cook/clean. now i need some piña! |
ooh, i love radishes. that's a good haul.
lunch today was fried rice with egg, pepper, jalapenos, soy chicken, onion, cilantro, cumin, tons of oyster sauce. it came out great. |
