The hype was all my fault, not the movie's or even the media's. I've been dying for Sants to get off his ass and make something as good as My Own Private Idaho, and I was sure this was going to be it.
I'm in Ohio, which might explain things a little. Yeah, they can marry. And then not have that marriage recognized legally. Good news is a teacher can be gay and adopt a kid. Legally. On the other hand, Milk died 30 fucking years ago, and it's astonishing that homosexuals are still considered second class citizens in many ways. True story: two men lived together for twenty years. One's parents more or less disowned him. He died. They ended up with all his assets because the man he lived with for twenty years had no legal claim. Yes, there have been improvements, but until homo couples are treated the exact same way as heteros, the fight ain't over. (evollove bangs fist on table in rightous indignation) I was pleased that the theater I saw this in was pretty full. If it convinces one pea-brained twat to open their mind a bit, then it's clearly the best movie of the year, no matter what I think of it. Way off topic now. Sorry. |
Speak of the Devil? I gotta see that, is it on dvd?

"Resident Evil: Extinction", not great, but not totally terrible either. And I can't really stand Milla Jovovich as an actress either. Only really could watch her in these movies and "Dazed and Confused", but otherwise she annoys me.

Rob posted his feelings about Lynch elsewhere. That's perfectly fine he doesn't like Lynch; some people don't like mind-expanding films, period... even though, in all reality, Lynch is a fairly mainstream director -- despite some dips in surrealism -- he still is probably a bit much for people and some people become aggitated at the heaps of praise thrown upon him. My feelings are that there are a million worse directors than Lynch one should direct their anger at. I mean, I'm not the biggest Guy Maddin fan in the world but I am glad he's doing what he's doing even if I don't like his films. But if Rob says "Fuck Lynch!" (paraphrasing) then sure... fuck Lynch. Some people just don't like his style.

I love Bully. [mad crush on young Bijou Phillips, but also just like the movie]
. so nostalgic for me. |
Re: Lynch and movies in general
I do not like, nor appreciate "dream logic" movies. if anything can happen then nothing means anything, and if anything can be read into it, then nothing is valid, just whatever you bring to it. I do not enjoy movies like that. I want movies to be like a well crafted short story, taut, with no filler, or extraneous nonsense. David Lynch's movies bore me. |
Right. And it's fine to think like that though someone else will probably wanna beat you up. Me, personally, I usually would rather a film have strong and interesting (and, preferably, surreal) visuals than a lot of boring dialog and an overly complicated plot. But either way. I think Lynch films are fairly straightforward, aside from Inland Empire and some of his shorts. But some people can't get into experimental/art films/surrealism. Even a lot of his less experimental films are usually more focused on creating an atmosphere than having a well-crafted story. The same thing that attracts me to his work would probably bore most people.
No matter who you are though, I don't see how anyone could deny Wild at Heart! (or Elephant Man and The Straight Story, for that matter) Wild at Heart is so good that it's sickening. |
I agree. Lost Highway and Mullholand Drive are pretty straight forward films, if you just take 20 mins afterwards to think about what you've watched.
Anway. I love Lynch. And Snake Skin Coats. And Bijou -- unrelated. Yes. |
when I want to have my mind expanded and blown up and rewired I go to books. movies are too boring for that.
|
Fair enough.
I think there's mind blowing, enlightening products in every field of entertainment. But clearly not everyone is in love with the projected image. |
