How do you guys pronounce Fyodor Dostoevsky?

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 04.11.2006 07:04 PM

Alice in Wonderland is pretty short and is really wonderful, so is Catcher in the Rye (but it is likely you have read that by now)

Notes from the Underground is pretty good, but I don't know if it is long enough.

im not entirely sure. my mom say doich voy oski, which i dont think is correct
there is a kid from russia in my math class, today i asked him (before seeing this thread!) and wasnt sure either

i say dos (as in MS-DOS) voy (as in voyage) ev (like every) ski (like water skis)

I suggest reading something fucked up to piss her off. I'd say Burroughs, but its pretty auto-biographical.

Dos-toy-yev-skee is the way I've heard it pronounced most consistently, by Russians and academics alike.

Alex's Trip 04.11.2006 10:34 PM

I say dos (like uno dos tres) toy (like a mattel) iv (you try hard not to make another syllable out of the ev, but it naturally comes out of the oi!) ski (like mountain skis)

That is how my russki friend Anna tought me how to say it.

Yeah, but the yev has to be really super played down. lots of emphasis on the other syllables though.

Read anything by Chuck Palahniuk, except for "Fight Club", "Survivor" and "Invisible Monsters" are even better anyways.
