Usually I find that social definitions are derived from poor understanding and use of academic definitions.

Although this is a social and not academic situation.

Now "social" and "academic" are two totally alien worlds? The social definition is built on a definition that applies to everyone. I'm only raising this fact. I am not denying the existence of ostentatious people.
