Will I have to dissect it, cause i am in no mood for dissecting literature.

gmku 05.15.2007 03:31 PM

hey, same here. Catholic boy gone bad. Now an aetheist. I'm also a half-assed Buddhist, though--but Buddhists don't believe in God (or at least this one doesn't)

Tried to be buddhist, but can't give up my old ways. I was raised catholic, and all that crap.

Yeah, I started to get obsessive as a Buddhist--about whether all my choices (about what I ate, drank, wore, said, did, you name it) were "right." Even though Buddhism doesn't have commandments per se, it has precepts, or guidelines, which were driving me just as nuts.

I did enjoy the meditative aspect, which helped me relax. And I think there's much that is good about Buddhism. It can be very common sensical, and it's messages are peace and tolerance, and concern for others, not bad messages for our times.

christian, philisophically similar to tolstoy, although the super pacifist hippie in him makes my blood curdle. ive recently become very fascinated in religion and its history, because i do believe in god just like how christianity and islam stem from judaism and the development of judaism from primitive religion. i love how there are many instances in genesis where people acually walked with god. enoch walked with god and he found so much favor in him that he was taken into heaven, god regularly walked in the garden of eden, god physically wrestled jacob and came physically came to visit abraham with his friends. shows how detatched we are today. i pretty much think all religions are delusioned, but thats just the nature of the beast.

nah, but i've been going to church almost once every week of my life. parents also have put me through religion classes since kindergarten which are total bullshit & complete wastes of my time. i've gone through every sacrament up to confirmation, which i've decided i'm not going to participate in.

I believe religion is entwined with culture.

certainly true, i was in a catholic school for 3 years until they were no longer able to provide certain support, i mean i don't have much resentment to them at all, Father Treacy was a very nice man (after he died, the only vice that came out was that he was a recovering alcoholic), i have always been a thinker, and when i got around to thinking about religion, it just clicked in my head

my sister went thru 9 years until public high, and is just weird (as in so normal, social and attends Clemson), a better example is another family i know, 4 kids, all St. Peters, then to Our Lady of Good Council, 2 of them turned out ok, the other 2 became social drinkers, wild party goers and in constant trouble, and they aren't gonna be anything, the cycle continues

my family is kind of the odd one out considering i only have one sibling, when i know families of 4 or more kids, my family are quite lapsed, and even my dad who's a registered republican really understands the world around him unlike many of his friends who are just thick, my sister is the only one who is just oblivious intellectually and literally, and for that she got hit by a car for not looking when crossing the street

anyways the catholic-bred count is up too 15 in the thread
