Yeah. I have it. It's awesome, man. Don't front on a score just cuz it's Toto. Shit's fitting. |

It's just a fun little yakuza movie with some surreal stuff, some ultraviolence, and some humor. I didn't know there was much hype about it beyond that. It's not a great film, but it does what it does quite well. It's way too long though. I'd tell you to give it another watch. |
I'm going to have to go out of my way and defend DV with this post.
Although it can't quite capture the look of film just yet (HD-DV is pretty damn close to 35mm), it has a multitude of strengths from a filmmaker's viewpoint. It's a hell of a lot cheaper to use than film and certainly more time effective. It gives the filmmaker more freedom and relief, providing instant access to footage rather than dailies. It has superior portability and allows filmmakers to use smaller crews, meaning more money available for the film and even easier maneuverability. Also, if the director has enough talent it can serve many stylistic purposes. |
Sure. But most directors don't know how to use it, and the films look like shit because of it.
The best looking film I've ever seen that's obviously filmed in DV is probably Rampo Noir. |

^ I know it looks horrible, should be horrible, and has gotten nothing but horrible reviews... but that only makes me want to see it more! There's something wrong with my sensibilities. Quote:
^ So great. "The Grandmother" is horrifying, and "Premonitions..." may just be one of the most perfect things Lynch has ever done. This set is far better than the films found on DYNAMIC01. |
Peter Jackson just doesn't make them like he used to...
![]() Meet The Feebles. |
Yeah, Feebles is amazing. Those 3 Peter Jackson horror films are amongst the best films ever. Too bad the last watchable film he made was probably the Frighteners.
Had the chance to watch Bad Taste in theaters at a midnight showing a few years ago. One of the best moments of my life!! |
Agreed. Enough with the damn hobbits. Could you imagine how orgasmic of a splatterfest this guy could make, being the Hollywood heavyweight (pun intended) that he is now?
|
Yeah. I can't believe he went on to Lords of Rings and Kings of Kongs. Blah.
Dead Alive, Feebles, Heavenly Creatures, Frighteners... he had such a great filmography going. |
Imagine if he had made the Lord of the Rings films first and THEN Dead Alive, etc? Wouldn't that have been radical?... impossible, I know, but... yeah.
|
If he were to do a sequel to Dead Alive, securing the big budget that a LOTR director would get, and releases it Nationally rather than in limited screenings with full-on marketing campaign -- I'd pretty much think Jackson to be the smartest director ever.

Yeah, what's the story with this one? I've never heard of it. Seems interesting. |
Super low budget film about an 80 year old bum looking for love. Based in New York. One of Howard Stern's favorite films. The box art has all these amazing quotes: "A masterpiece!" and they're all REAL quotes. When you watch it, you might think it's just some sleazy trash film but there's more to it than that.
The first scene has an 80 year old man hitting on a 5 year girl.. and it's hilarious, this sounds "disturbing", but it's hilarious.. "hey lil girl you think i'm handsome?" And then he hits her, in slow motion, in the head with a metal pipe, and he runs over her head and eats her brains. Later, he rips a dude's head off and shits down his throat. He also cuts someone's tits off, cuts someone's dick off, etc. All these really "serious" things are filmed in between scenes of him trying to get a date and hanging out with his friends that he works with and him taking care of cats. I can't really describe it.. it's VERY surreal, filmed in a really bizarre style.. there's some extremely psychadelic imagery... but most importantly it's one of the smartest, funniest films I've ever seen. Look it up on imdb... |
Adam, have you ever seen Spaceman?
|
Nope, but it'll be the next thing I watch, since it's on the netflix instant watch. THanks!!
