I do hate it. It’s a waste of tremendous potential. And of course I should be quoted forever on things said in moments of passion, but I stand by that statement. Glad to know You’re more aware of my own posting history than I am.
Not to mention the Black Lives Matter protesters didn’t breach the chamber, shut down and evacuate the government and stand at the dais yelling inane bullshit while tearing down the American flag and putting up a trump flag. But whatever. The president told them he loves them so they probably all will just go home and have their little pretend movement validated. |

What a day. Not even the burn-baby-burn '60s produced something like this. "America" tanked today (Republican Rep. Mike Gallagher: "I have not seen anything like this since I deployed to Iraq") - yet at the same time it reversed course with the Georgia elections and the final nail in Trump's backasswards coup attempt. Let's stay with the positive and please put Stacey Abrams in charge of everything, because the midterms always go against the incumbent administration, and while I celebrate the new majority, it's the slimmest majority possible and it'll have to work turbocharged for two years if we want things to get done.
|
Quote:
this slim majority isn't a mandate for heavily progressive policies. those right now would only bring a backlash comparable to the one that gave birth to the tea party--and that was merely about romney/nixoncare! not that the wingnuts aren't already activated, but biden won with the help of republicans, and should look for workable compromise if he wants to continue controlling congress. i think an infrastructure plan would be a better and more targeted way to stimulate the economy than the current fed manipulations, and it's something that most would agree on, provided enough pork goes to each state. then there'd be some adjustment on taxes (match capital gains with income bracket?), new regulation (especially tech), a new supreme to replace breyer, and a bit of horse trading on climate. criminal justice reform. obamacare tweaks towards universal coverage/public option. foreing policy and rebuilding alliances will be crucial, with an eye towards climate as part of global security maybe i'm getting old but i'll take a return to normality and some repair to the damage done these 4 years over pie in the sky promises, no matter how urgent they appear. e.g. climate can be worked on without a promise of federal jobs for all. |
^ I'd like to go point-by-point there, but right now I can't. Don't misunderstand me, though - the task ahead is so big that forget what I want; everything you just listed will take a working turbocharged senate. And yes, Biden got 32% or so of his votes from people "voting against the other guy", fed the fuck up with the current shitshow (which is why all the answer Trump needs to "Where did 81 million votes come from?!!!" is a look in the mirror).
Now, ANYTHING Democrats do from now on will be labeled a radical communist move, even if it's just changing a lightbulb in the U.S. embassy in Berlin. So all I'm saying is: don't let this be a sit-on-your-asses ultraslim majority afraid of dumb polls. |

your assumption is that they'll lose congress in 2 years and must do all they can right now. i understand, that's possible. but i think if they push for too much the loss is guaranteed. otoh my take is that consolidation of a majority is possible and should be attempted. and it can be attempted via areas where there is common ground in the public. and while matching capital gains tax to income bracket instead of giving it special treatment, or at least limiting the level at which it gets special treatment, is sure to be rejected by republicans, it should not stoke great popular discontent. a presidency is nearly worthless without congress, as the merrick garland sabotage proved. i think democrats should focus on growing their majorities for years to come rather than try to squeeze quick victories between republican administrations. |
I think they should take the low road and smash obstructionists, And in the process maybe earn a few of the votes they got from actual leftists.

I went to bed at like 3AM, shortly after the meeting was recommenced. Got out of bed at 9:30AM and just caught the final statements. So I guess the discussions and protests by Republicans had been silenced. Trump shot himself in the foot, his political career and his family's is done for good. At least I surely hope so.
What I do wonder is: where was the police, security, even military when Trump's troops stormed into the building? They should have seen this coming for days, weeks even! They should have stopped them from getting near the building. They should even have forbidden the protests because of Covid lockdown! |
