Ok...I guess I can assume those you listed...were near the time of their inception. I've seen many bands on their first tours/first year of touring. Sometimes, as backup bands, they were superior to the main attraction. In '72, I worked at the Diamond Head Crater Celebration in Honolulu helping install the rain tarp for the main stage. While doing this I met a dude, 16..I was 14, and he was playing with Carlos Santana that day....it was Neil Schon, later with JOURNEY (the band I can't stand)...but it was very interesting talking with him...I couldn't believe he was gonna be onstage with Santana. Then, sure enough, later that day....there he was. I was right in from, maybe 40 feet from the stage watching him keep up with Carlos...lick for lick. AMAZING !!! |
When I was younger:
Taking Back Sunday Thursday Converge Norma Jean the Chariot Xiu Xiu(Not right away but shortly after Knife Play) the Mars Volta Yellow Swans |
I hope in 20 years time I can make a list as good as some of the ones in this thread.

The only few I can think of (not impressive at all) are
The Mars Volta Wolf Parade (still basically new... but y'know..) The Arcade Fire (just after the EP originally came out I stumbled upon them by accident.) |
