Not that I'm aware of...
But I've always thought that it was renamed New York from New Amsterdam (or New Netherlands) by the British after they kicked out the Dutch, so they'd be the ones to blame for the less than creative names.

Huh, didn't realize that. I just figured we changed it from New Netherlands since it just doesn't roll off the tongue so well.
