Surely there's no need for a sudy to confirm that?

GrungeMonkey 06.08.2008 09:11 AM

i shall be moving down to east london for uni in september, should be interesting, looking forward to many years of debt afterwards haha

Toilet & Bowels 06.08.2008 10:11 AM

the whole of east london isn't full of bengali kids who hassle everyone, there are none of them in clapton or homerton, for example. when i move back into london it will be east, no question.

sarramkrop 06.08.2008 11:46 AM

I live in the most peaceful part of East London and it's more inner city than Soho.

sarramkrop 06.08.2008 11:47 AM

Danny - I'm as working class as they come.

the ikara cult 06.08.2008 11:56 AM

Danny Himself 06.08.2008 12:16 PM

It's fine, now that I know you're thoroughly working class I can look forward to discussing 20th century electoral reforms with you in the future.

Nope. It's from Romany Gypsy 'chavi' meaning child or 'chav' meaning mate.

actually yes. In our local slovakian dialect we have a word "čávo" (read "chav-oh"), which means "a cool dude".
just a reminder - there's a lot of Gypsies in eastern Europe, including Slovakia.

demonrail666 06.08.2008 04:05 PM

Some people say it's an acronym of Council Housed And Violent, but no, as Lurker says, it is a gypsy word.

You're an ostentatious, well-spoken, bi-lingual queer. That's about as working class as pimms at Wimbledon, you ponce.

NB - I'm also a fake working-class thing.

PP - London is ace and turd in something like equal measure; everyone should live there once, no-one should live there forever.

Avoid Holloway, it's shit.

Toilet & Bowels 06.08.2008 06:05 PM

one of the things that is shit about london is that you find yourself (or at least i find this) constantly having to find new friends because a lot of people who live in london aren't from london and so at some point tend to return to wherever it is they came from.

I've also heard that it the comes from the name of people from Chatham. Rubbish.

This is one possible origin. But I think it's interesting that for a word that has become so commonplace so recently (certainly no earlier than the 1990s), the origin is so vague.

I know that I was aware of people being 'chavvy' before this, but the meaning was different. Same with the Romany or Gypsy words.

Lurker 06.08.2008 06:23 PM

Romany Gypsy is one group.
