I was standing in a Matthew Barney installation a couple of months ago.
I looked over at the guy next to me and it was Elvis Costello. |

Although his output since then has been spotty, I'm convinced that he's made seven good ones since. |

That would only be true if I thought Elvis Costello was really really cool. |

He is, only you are cooler to ignore him. |
hayden
Yes. Very uncool. It'd probably be less terrible than any of Elvis Costello's output. i would expect that from a 15 yr old.......... |
[quote=atari 2600]I wouldn't call him "mediocre."
There's been many friends over the years that like him more than I do, but most of the material with The Attractions is particularly very good. I don't like his wife's (Diana Krall) jazz, but it's not like she's the worst or anything. I really enjoy "Peel Me a Grape". Actually, I QUITE like it. http://solosong.net/grape.html And, oddly enough, it was written by a man..? Maybe everything but the lyrics... |
i love how people can't accept the fact that i just don't like elvis costello. he annoys me. and i'm sure a lot of people would say the same about me, but i am way past caring about it.

It's ok off course. But hayden or atsonicpark's posts in the thread may explain why Kim Gordon can say the board is frequented by "14-year-olds who have nothing else to do". |
It was 30 years ago today that Elvis Costello and the Attractions appeared on Saturday Night Live. They'd wanted to play Radio Radio but SNL said no as it was thought to be 'anti-media.' So they started playing Less Than Zero, but stopped eight seconds in and played Radio Radio anyway, which led to them being banned from SNL for 12 years. Tip o' the hat to the Post Punk Progressive Pop Party.

He has an annoying voice, an annoying attitude and he writes songs that I don't care about. He sucks.
|
Best thing he's ever done:

Hey, I bet if you happened to mention Elvis Costello to any of your buds, they would roll their eyes at you. Am I right? sarramkrop has an annoying attitude, and he writes posts that I don't care about. He sucks. |
My buds think he sucks too. You too suck.

And my list continues to swell...
But seriously, this thread made me re-listen to When I Was Cruel last night. It's a bit long, but if he had trimmed two or three tracks, this disc would go into the "damn-near perfect" catagory. He uses computers and contemporary beats on this album, but sparingly and the songs themselves are solid. I don't think that it will sound dated 20 years from now. The lyrics are top-notch and the subject matter is pleasantly varied: a lawyer considers his career in Soul for Hire, an aging hipster meets his match in Spooky Girlfriend, 45 refers to aging, wwii, record singles, a gun. No EC album would be complete without a vitriolic rant, and Alibi is one of his best ("I love you just as much/As I hate your guts" and "Sometimes I'm so forgiving/EVERYTHING seems bad to me" are standout lines). So, fine. WHY is he annoying? The voice? The face? The lyrics? The tunes? I'm rational. If you can tell us WHY he's "annoying" I'll read what you write. I'm always willing to consider a cogent, well-formed argument whenever I come across one. |
