You knw I did read an article about the vanishing payphone, didn't believe it until I left NYC and was in Portland Maine recently and had to walk all over to find one.

If you remember in the 80's they took out many of the fire alarm boxes because there were enough payphones, now they're taking out the payphones because they assume everyone has a cell. It is all really short sighted, in 5 years I predict ATT and Verizon will petition the FCC to shut down their local service and remove the copper for scrap. Supposedly they are selling off their rural business because there is not enough money in land line service. And then there will be a solar burst that will fry all the satellites one day and we'll be screwed (or blessed depending on how you look at it). Maybe there is opportunity in this older technology for community based groups to step up, just like some have done with AM radio.

reason for mobile phones-

1. no home line
2. i dont answer calls if i ont feel like it
3. working in a big complex a mobile phone is neccesary
4. work pays half my bill
5. i am rarely home
6. there is very very few pay phones where i live
7. it is cheaper than a land line
8. i need to be contactable by clients
9. my whole living is made from word of mouth, i need to be contactable to eat and pay rent

i'm on my 3rd iphone, i think. first one, i was sitting in billyburg and the screen cracked for no reason. i paid the 30 bucks for express shipping and they did the rest, but then they sent me a refurbished model that wasn't quite up to par and sent me a loaner phone until that one's fixed (catching the shipping on their tab this time).

this sort of thing was pretty expected with 1st gen hardware, but it's still the best phone i've ever touched.

oh, and even when the first screen cracked, the touchscreen was fully functional. it just didn't look as pretty.

ugh, no kidding. i was at the mall a few years ago with a friend who didn't have a cell phone (she was 12, for christ's sake) and we fucking scavenged that place for a pay phone. i think we eventually found ONE, hidden somewhere.

it's a fucking handheld computer designed to watch tv.

i've had a few phones. my last one is one i'm most proud of. it has fallen in a swimming pool, survived several falls off roofs, etc.. and has be stepped on and sat on. it started splitting in half, but still worked fine.
